INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In the present time, the quality of life is an actual issue in our society. Some

people consider that the quality of life depends on the location, while others are sure that

depending on their goals/dreams in life and his/her goals in life. Statistical data says that

the location is one of the key factors that influence the quality of life. Urban and rural

living has a lot of distinguishing features that influence the quality of life to a great extent.

(Compare and Contrast Urban and Rural living essay, 2014)

Rural areas can be defined as those pieces of land that can lie outside city

centers and towns. They are mostly marked by large farms, agricultural activity or large

pieces of land that lie idle without many developmental activities. An urban area, on the

other hand, is an area marked with developed town centers and sometimes these towns

have developed into cities. In a majority of cases, these towns were once rural areas, which

through advances in technology, modernization, industrialization, and urbanization have

grown into what they are now.

In this study, the researchers wanted to elaborate on the reason why there are some

students prefer to live in urban than rural areas and vice versa. According to the Philippine

Statistics Authority (PSA) — more than half of the country’s population of over 100

Page | 2
million now reside in urban areas, with four regions registering the highest levels of

urbanization.

Additionally to give information as to the education approach of both areas can

offer since education is the main path to have a successful career for students. In which the

researchers performed various surveys on the difference between rural and urban

education, focusing on the pros and cons of education that the area has. — “Rural kids

drop their schools or fall behind. They also lack after-school activities. Many students have

to help their parents to earn a living. Moreover, not all children living in less developed

villages have the opportunity to enroll in colleges. This makes many beautiful minds to get

lost because they live in rural areas. Poverty is the very first problem that makes the

difference between rural and urban education. The rates of unemployment, malnutrition,

and poverty are higher in rural areas than in big cities. Because of population density, it

becomes more visible. Poverty, in its turn, affects educational outcomes, and frequently

leads to early drop-outs. In this case, nobody can even think of getting into college.”

The purpose of this study is to show the similarities and differences of urban and

rural lifestyles through interviews and surveying all Grade 11 Students of St. Jude College

of Dasmariñas Cavite. For the researchers’ to find out the students' insights about living in

rural where they depend on what is available in their surroundings in terms of food and has

an amicable atmosphere or to live in urban areas where everything is advanced and

technology-dependent.

Page | 3
Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study aims to distinguish the similarities and differences of living in

a rural and an urban place with the selected Grade 11 being the respondents. Specifically,

this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the Grade 11 Students of St. Jude College's insights on the benefits of

living in a rural and urban place?

 How both areas differ in terms of food sustainability, opportunities to

work, and education?

2. In what way that the city people are different in the province?

 The behavioral approach to urban and rural people.

3. How the people in both areas differ in adapting to a certain situation?

Hypothesis

The following are the null hypothesis of this research:

 There are no significant differences in living in a rural place to

urban place.

Page | 4
 There are no significant similarities between livings in rural places

to urban places.

The following are the alternative hypothesis of this research:

 There are significant differences in living in a rural place to urban

place.

 There are significant similarities between livings in rural places to

urban places.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In exploration, we found knowledge and learning that is related to our

research. This talking point prompts researchers to conduct studies about the similarities

and differences between living in urban and rural places in the response of Grade 11

Students in St. Jude College Dasmariñas, Cavite and other correlated subjects.

Leevy Roy studied in 1940 the contrasts about the urban and rural areas. He

showed that families from both rural and urban have similarities despite the differences in

location of homes and methods of making a living. Though, there are different points in

which the patterns manifest themselves in the two areas.

Nelson (2017) shows the pros of living in rural areas in terms of safety and privacy.

The said place provides another layer of privacy since fewer people are living there.

Another thing is that there is a distance present between the neighbors which there will be

Page | 9
no nosy neighbors gossiping you or “harm.” But on the brighter note, you feel safe around

the rural neighborhood since you all know each other.

Hamm (2019) stated that there’s a strong libertarian streak in an almost rural area,

which makes you more an independent person.

In this article from 2018, the lifestyle from rural areas is the complete opposite

from urban areas since they focus much more on enjoying the simpler things in life.

As mentioned, every house is distanced from each other, rural people have free

space to spare to grow crops near their houses, which they use as food sources, Which is

why their cost of living is way cheaper compared to that of urban people. Though, the fact

that they have lower salaries means less of your money goes to the government.

For job opportunities, employment in rural is scarce since the apparatuses present

in the place are limited. You also need to travel to reach such destinations which this goes

to transportation. Since places are quite far from each other, people from rural areas need

vehicles. This may be a positive thing but this also means that we need to worry about

things such as car maintenance and repair, insurance, and other responsibilities.

If you can’t afford to buy a vehicle then commuting is another way to reach your

destinations. Though, the only disadvantage of commuting in rural areas is that there are

fewer vehicles that make it hard to commute.

Page | 10
In the article from 2017, state the pros and cons of living in urban areas. Unlike in

rural areas, major cities share a lot of things, noise, lack of space, cost of living, etc. Noise

levels in urban areas are high due to the traffic, horns, sirens, the people in general and all

which restricts you to relax more or find peace.

Also, the lack of space is present in these areas. Instead of having to own large land

like in rural, urban places tend to have apartments instead. Some apartments are inside the

building which we must be creative for how we use space and some apartments or houses

in subdivisions or villages.

In terms of transportation, your transportation situation will be greatly dependent.

You will still likely to have your car but vehicles are limitless. You can ride subways,

train, bus, and others. The only downside is this is bad traffic.

The cost of living in urban areas are different compared to rural areas. Salaries tend

to be higher but this doesn’t always help with them. Prices of regular items are being

higher due to the higher concentration of people and therefore higher demand.

Ennis (1973) studied the 16 personality factors on the students who were

drawn from the rural, suburban, medium-sized urban and large urban population. The

results indicated that high achievers are more self-sufficient, more relaxed and industrious,

socially precise, and intelligent.

Page | 11
In the comparative study of Saxena in 1963 about the achievement in

science of urban and rural students, concludes that the dominance of the performance of

urban students to the performance of rural students may be due to the following: (i) The

difference in the standard of teaching; (ii) Qualifications of teachers; and (iii) Quality and

quantity of apparatus used.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, research procedure, the subject of

the study, and research instruments.

Research Design

This study determined the insights of Grade 11 Students of St. Jude College

of Dasmariñas, Cavite. The descriptive – correlation method was used in this study.

In a descriptive method, the researchers survey is to find out vulnerable

data about living in rural and urban areas, to seek information to develop and to widen the

knowledge of the researchers’, teachers’, and students’ by the means of interviewing Grade

11 Students of St. Jude College of Dasmariñas, Cavite.

Page | 12
Subject of the Study

The respondents in this study are the Grade 11 Students of St. Jude College

Dasmariñas, Cavite in the Academic Year 2019-2020.

Research Instrument

The main tool used in the study was a semi-structured interview. A set of

questions was constructed for the student respondents. The interview contains the

following questions:

1. Where is it easier to live, and why?

2. Which place is much safer to live in? Why?

3. What are your thoughts about the behavior of people in both areas?

4. The education approach present in both areas.

5. The chances of life sustainability in both areas.

Research Procedure

The original title proposed by the researchers’ was checked and revised by

the researchers’ adviser to maintain conformity to the subject of the research. The

Page | 13
researchers then constructed questions for the respondents to answer and was presented

and analyzed by the researchers’ adviser to ensure validity. Permit to conduct research was

secured by letter with the signature of the subject and academic adviser. After getting

permission, the researchers picked target respondents from every strand, interviewed them

the next day and recorded their answers through video and voice recording. After gathering

all the information from the target respondents’, the researchers analyze the gathered data.

Sampling Technique

This study is designed as typical case sampling, a type of purposive

sampling since the sample is formed by the discretion of the judge purely considering the

purpose of study along with the understanding of the target audience. The participants are

selected solely based on research requirements and elements who do not suffice the

purpose are kept out of the sample. Typical case sampling is a purposive sampling

technique used when you are interested in the normality/typicality of the units (e.g.,

people, cases, events, settings/contexts, places/sites) you are interested in because they

are normal/typical. The word typical does not mean that the sample is representative in the

sense of probability sampling (i.e., that the sample shares the same/similar characteristics

of the population being studied). Rather, the word typical means that the researcher can

compare the findings from a study using typical case sampling with other similar samples

(i.e., comparing samples, not generalizing a sample to a population). Hence, a total of 20

Page | 14
respondents were selected: 8 from HUMSS, 2 from CK, 1 from HK 3 from GAS, and 6

from STEM.

Chapter IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents analyzes and interprets the data gathered from the insights of

Grade 11 Students of St. Jude College Dasmariñas, Cavite about living in rural and urban

places.

1. Profile of the Respondents

In this part, the researchers wanted to show information about the respondents.

1.1 Respondents’ Previous Place

This graph shows that out of selected 20 respondents, there are only 2 persons who

are from the urban place which is from the STEM strand and HUMSS strand and 1 person

came from both areas which are also from the STEM strand. The rest came from the

province which transferred here in Cavite.

1.2 Respondents’ Strand/Section

This graph shows the total of selected respondents for this research. There are 20

respondents which consist of 6 students from STEM Strand, from HUMSS Strand, 2 from

CK Strand, 1 from HK S Strand and 3 students from GAS Strand.

2. Interview Questions

2.1 Easier Place to Live

The majority of the respondents are in favor of living in rural areas, where

according to them, living in rural areas is much easier because the resources are more

accessible and have an amiable atmosphere.

Page | 17
While the rest of the respondents prefer urban areas, because of the advance

technologies/ facilities, better transportation, and education.

2.2 Safety

In this question, most of the respondents are in favor of the idea that rural is a safer

place to live since, for them, the people in the neighborhood are familiar with each other.

The reason why they didn’t choose urban as a safer place to live because they believe that

urban areas are prone to accidents and have a higher crime rate.

Meanwhile, the minority of the respondents prefer urban because the government is

more attentive in providing security to the public.

2.3 Behavior

The perspective of some respondents states that urban people’s behavior is different

from those that live in rural, wherein they mentioned that urban people are difficult to

approach since they are dependent on technology and social media. While urban people

believe that is updated in the latest trend as to lifestyle, fashion, technology, etc. , is a must

for them. This affects the image of urban people to look unapproachable to rural people.

Page | 18
On the other hand, urban people state that rural people are nice and friendly. Also,

they show more respect to other people especially to elders unlike most teenagers in urban

areas.

Some respondents shared that, people in both areas are neither alike nor different.

2.4 Education

The majority of the respondents stated that there’s no difference in the education

approach in both areas. Since rural areas also give good quality of education and teachers

are focused on their students, even though they lack facilities and advancement in lessons.

While in the case of urban areas, they may have complete facilities and much better

lectures, but in some cases, teachers don’t have the initiative to give proper guidance to

those students who are being left behind in the pursuit of their studies.

2.5 Life Sustainability

Urban Areas:

Most of the resources are present in this place, but the price is a bit higher

than in rural areas since the products are being processed and mostly imported from other

places. In terms of opportunities in work and career advancement, they find it easier to get

Page | 19
a job since agencies are established in cities. In terms of facilities, urban areas are one step

ahead in terms of modernity and advance technology, plus there are more utilities

compared to rural areas.

Rural Areas:

In this place, resources are more accessible since they get most of them in

their vicinity. For the opportunities in work, they find it hard to look for a stable job, also

there is a required age to be able to work unlike in urban, they allow underage to work as a

part-timer. In terms of facilities, they have less equipment to provide.

Chapter V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the findings, the conclusions made and the

recommendations offered.

Summary

Page | 20
This study was observed at St. Jude College Dasmariñas, Cavite with the Grade 11

students from different strands as respondents’. A descriptive method was used in this

study. The researchers’ used a semi-structured interview to discover the respondents’

insights about living in rural and urban areas.

The problem was conducted to determine the viewpoint of Grade 11 Students in St.

Jude College Dasmariñas, Cavite (SJCDC) regarding the following questions: Which place

is easier to live and why? Which place is safer to live in? What is the behavior of the

people in both areas? What is the educational approach that they have in both areas? How

do they sustain their daily needs?

Through these problems stated, the researchers came up with the following

hypotheses: H1 There is no significant difference in living in a rural place to urban place

and vice versa. H2 There is a significant difference in living in a rural place to urban place

and vice versa.

After administering the questions, the researchers decipher the answers to be ab;e

to determine the viewpoint of the respondents of the behavior, education, and necessities

both in rural and urban areas.

Conclusions

Based on the data that the researchers’ have gathered, most of the respondents

prefer to live in a rural area in terms of available resources, simple way of living, and the

Page | 21
behavior that rural people has, such as respect to others most especially to the elderly and

the amiable atmosphere they are experiencing.

In terms of the education approach, there is no much difference based on the

respondents since both areas can give a good quality of education, though both areas lack

in some aspects.

In terms of safety, they stated that rural area is a safer place to live since people in

the neighborhood are familiar to each other, they also stated that urban place has a higher

crime rate compared to the rural areas, although, the government is more attentive to

provide security to the people in urban areas.

In terms of job opportunities, it is easier to get in urban areas since the

establishment of agencies is there, plus underage people can also work as part-timers

compared to rural areas, they have none of these as it has an age requirement.

Recommendations

The researchers had made recommendations based on the conclusion:

1. The researchers recommend to future researchers to have a greater number of

respondents with a ratio of 5:5 (for example, if the respondents from rural areas

have 30, the number of respondents from urban areas should have the same.)

Page | 22
2. The researchers recommend this study to the people who are not aware of what

rural and urban areas have or to help those people who are finding a place that suits

them.

3. The researchers recommend those future generation researchers find more concrete

and accurate data to use for their research.

a. Bañadera (Laguna)

i. Where is it easier to live, and why?

Page | 24
“I think it’s easier to live in rural because the products in this place

is less expensive and there are many plants and trees where you can

get them as your sources of food. While in urban, I think the

products there are more expensive because it was imported from

other places or provinces like cloth, fruits, and vegetables.”

ii. Which place is much safer to live in? Why?

“Rural is a safer place to live because there are fewer cars, meaning

there less chances of accidents. While in urban, there are lots of

people, it’s scary because there are (many) criminals.”

iii. What are your thoughts about the behavior of people in both areas?

“In urban, there are people there who are prideful, boastful but they

are nice. In rural, people there very generous despite of they only get

almost none.”

iv. The education approach present in both areas.

“The education approach is better in urban because the facilities

there are better and complete and the quality of education is great. In

terms of teachers’ skills, urban is also great due to the enhancement

of teaching to their students.”

v. The chances of life sustainability in both areas.

Page | 25
“It’s easier to find jobs in urban and has easier transportation. While

in food, it’s easier to get in rural since there are fruits and vegetables

present.”

b. Alcomendras (Negros Occidental)

i. Where is it easier to live, and why?

“For me it’s rural. Because even that it is a farmland, it is tranquil to

live in that place. While in urban it is overcrowded there and it has a

higher risk that you can get a disease.”

ii. Which place is much safer to live in? Why?

“I think it’s urban. In terms of safety, it’s better there. For example,

if there are accidents happen there are near hospitals to admit and

there are police that are easier to access.”

iii. What are your thoughts about the behavior of people in both areas?

“Depends. There are people from rural places who are well-

disciplined and there are very abusive, same goes for urban.

iv. The education approach present in both areas.

“For me, it’s better in rural because even though you’re from public

or private, their system is the same. Even the teachers’ salaries are

not that high, they are diligent to teach.”

v. The chances of life sustainability in both areas.

Page | 26
“Just like what I’ve said before, it’s easier to get food in a rural

place. There, you can plant vegetables in your backyard and may use

them for your everyday needs. In terms of work, it’s easier in urban

because, in rural, there are less better jobs while in urban there’s a

lot and has a higher minimum wage.”

c. Danao (Makati)

i. Where is it easier to live, and why?

“Urban because in terms of transportation everything is there such

as MRT, LRT, Grab, etc. Also, all opportunities are present here

especially work (the salary is higher), the minimum wage is higher

in urban than in rural”

ii. Which place is much safer to live in? Why?

“Urban. Since there are streetlights everywhere at night thus, you

don’t have to worry.”

iii. What are your thoughts about the behavior of people in both areas?

“Rural people are nicer because they are friendly and easy to

approach.”

iv. The education approach present in both areas.

“They have the same educational approach. The only difference is

that the facilities in urban have larger improvements and complete

Page | 27
unlike in rural, not all facilities there cannot upgrade or improve

theirs.”

v. The chances of life sustainability in both areas.

“In urban, there is a greater chance of sustainability because job

opportunities are present there. The transportation is also convenient

there. Also, the salary in urban has higher minimum wage compared

to rural that’s why there are rural people go to urban places.”

d. Insigne (Mindoro)

i. Where is it easier to live, and why?

“Rural because it is quieter there and more peaceful when you live

there. It’s easier because our province is really small that almost all

the people there know you and there is unity present.”

ii. Which place is much safer to live in? Why?

“For me, rural because it is far from the chaos and it is peaceful

there.

iii. What are your thoughts about the behavior of people in both areas?

“In urban, there are people there who are prideful, boastful but they

are nice. In rural, people there very generous despite of they only get

almost none.”

iv. The education approach present in both areas.

Page | 28
“For me, the educational approach is better in rural, even though

they lack in facilities, the teaching strategies there are great.”

v. The chances of life sustainability in both areas.

“It’s easier to find jobs in urban and has easier transportation. While

in food, it’s easier to get in rural since there are fruits and vegetables

present.”

e. Montallana (Eastern Samar)

i. Where is it easier to live, and why?

“For me, it’s easier to live in urban than rural depending on the

person where he is more comfortable. So based on my experience,

it’s easier in rural because your expenses are not that big and the

products there are not that expensive.”

ii. Which place is much safer to live in? Why?

“Depends on the person how they handle themselves.”

iii. What are your thoughts about the behavior of people in both areas?

“Of course there are behaviors that are bad and good. There are

crime incidents also happening in the rural place but not as many as

in urban that there are “mabigat” cases like what happened to Vhong

Navarro.”

iv. The education approach present in both areas.

Page | 29
“The education approach is better in rural because the teachers there

tend to focus more on teaching the students.”

v. The chances of life sustainability in both areas.

“In terms of food, it’s in rural. You’re lucky if you can plant them to

your lot. The transportation is not a problem here in rural since you

can walk to reach your certain destination.”

f. Garma (Ilocos Norte/Quezon City)

i. Where is it easier to live, and why?

“For me, it’s easier to live in rural because the resources are already

present there. Plus, having an easier place/lifestyle for me is

working hard to get what you need. For urban, yes it’s fairly easy

there too but there are cases like food, materials are harder to get

compared to the rural places.”

ii. Which place is much safer to live in? Why?

“It depends on where you live and how you handle yourself in your

surroundings so for me, there’s none.”

iii. What are your thoughts about the behavior of people in both areas?

“In terms of socializing, urban people are more approachable for me

since they know how they welcome newcomers to theirs. In the case

of my situation living in rural areas, some people are arrogant and

feel like they’re superior and all.”

Page | 30
iv. The education approach present in both areas.

“The education approach of both areas is different in terms of

different aspects: in terms of teaching, rural has it better since

teachers there are like “they know exactly what to do” or more

experienced since most of them there are older. For facilities, urban

has it better since they are more advanced.”

v. The chances of life sustainability in both areas.

“Job opportunities in urban places have higher chances than rural

places because of the establishments present there. For

transportation, it’s also easier in urban because, in my province,

there are no trains, jeeps and so on. Only tricycles and buses are

only present there. As for the resources it depends on what materials

you need for you. But for in case of food, you can get it easier in

rural areas.”

2. GAS

a. Bañadera (Laguna)

i. Where is it easier to live, and why?

Page | 31
“I think it’s easier here in urban because here everything is present

like transportation.”

ii. Which place is much safer to live in? Why?

“It’s safer in rural because it’s quieter there and there’s less

pollution”

iii. What are your thoughts about the behavior of people in both areas?

“I think people in urban places are wild because they are noisier and

they are updated. While in rural, people there are composed and

well-disciplined.”

iv. The education approach present in both areas.

“There are more apparatuses present in urban places compared to

rural places and in terms of teaching they are the same.”

v. The chances of life sustainability in both areas.

“Like I said, in rural, it’s more peaceful there and simpler.”

b. Balocating

i. Where is it easier to live, and why?

Page | 32
“For me, it’s easier to live in rural because you can plant crops as

your source of food. You don’t need to buy from supermarkets of

what you need anymore.”

ii. Which place is much safer to live in? Why?

“For me, it’s rural because there, you know or familiar with the

people there and you know such things. Here, sometimes people are

just “avoiding things out” that makes you feel unsafe.”

iii. What are your thoughts about the behavior of people in both areas?

“In rural, people there are like they’re your friends that are easy to

socialize with. While here in urban, sometimes people here are

prideful to the other people.”

iv. The education approach present in both areas.

“In urban, the quality of education here is better because they have

better access to facilities such as books for the students. Where in

rural, it’s hard sometimes because you need to travel far just to reach

the school you’re attending. In urban, they have a better way of

teaching.”

v. The chances of life sustainability in both areas.

“In rural, there are almost no problems because the things you need

are already there while in urban you need to work hard just to get

money to spend on your needs.”

Page | 33
c. Verano

i. Where is it easier to live, and why?

“It’s easier in rural because you can live there even you don’t have

much money in you and you can work things to earn your needs
