Abstract: The assignment contains an indo-sustainable furniture

design, which means a design inspired from an Indian element and
created/constructed using environmental friendly materials.

• The Purpose of designing the furniture is to create a design inspired by an Indian Element.

• Along with this, the motive is to design a furniture using sustainable material as it can have a

great impact on our planet.

• Sustainable product means, the product will at the end of its lifespan be either completely

waste-free or can be absorbed into manufacturing something else.

• Sustainability has always been a core component of Indian culture. Its philosophy and values

have underscored a sustainable way of life.

• Sustainable and environmentally friendly practices and psyches still continue to be part of the

lifestyle and culture. India has both a culture of hoarding (in case something might come in

useful), and thriftiness (re-use and hand-me-downs).

• It is not an uncommon sight in an Indian household to witness an old cloth being used as a

duster.

• The concept of designing such table is to create a multi purpose furniture piece

which do not stays stable with its purpose and design.

• The idea of furniture is inspired by traditional Indian baithak which is

designed in a way where a central thickness and the top is justified separately.

• The above mentioned idea is incorporated in the design.

• The furniture has 2 cushions and a board that can be detached.

• It serves the purpose of a centre table and an eating table.

• A sustainable material that is used is Bamboo.

• For cushions, color blue has been used as it is associated with Lord Krishna

and Lord Rama, who spent their lives protecting humankind and destroying

evil, hence they are colored blue.

• Blue represents power, magnificence, bravery, stable mind, determination and

depth of character.

Bamboo has become one of the best choices for furniture. It can also be used as wall partition and divider.
Interior decorators uses bamboo because it’s simply beautiful; and its mere presence can be considered decorative as well.

Pros:
• Vertical bamboo has a uniform, striped look.
• Horizontal bamboo shows the “knuckles” in the grain pattern.
• Strand woven bamboo mixes the grass fibers together so that they’re
interlocked.
• Because bamboo is naturally light in color, it may be “carbonized” to
darken the surface.

Cons:
• Inexpensive bamboo is susceptible to scratches and dings.
• Bamboo grass readily absorbs water and is susceptible to damage
from water and excessive humidity.
• The contemporary look of bamboo doesn’t fit with all décor.
• Bamboo furniture is limited to a few tonal shades.

Sustainable/ Industrial/ Recycled furniture design is an effort

to address the environmental impact of furniture products on
the environment by considering all aspects of the design and
manufacturing process.
