Question 1: (4+4+4+3)

(A) A coaxial cable consists of two concentric long hollow cylinders of zero resistance; the inner
has radius a, the outer has radius b , and the length of both is l , with l >> b. Length of
coaxial cable is taken to be 50cm having inner radius of 1mm and outer radius of 4mm. the
space between conductor is assumed to be filled with air. If total charge on inner conductor
is 30nC then
(a) Find charge density on each conductor
(b) Find magnitude and direction of Electric field

(B) Volume charge density is located in free space as ρ= 2 exp(-1000r) nC/m3 for 0 < r <1mm
while ρ=0 elsewhere. Find Total charge enclosed by spherical shell of radius 1mm.
Question 2:
(A) A cylindrical conductor of radius a and conductivity σ carries a steady current I which is
distributed uniformly over its cross-section, as shown in Figure
(a) Compute the electric field E inside the conductor. (b) Compute the magnetic field B G just
outside the conductor.

(B)Find Exact Potential for a spherical shell of radius R, which carries a surface charge
σ=kcosƟ, note that p is in z direction i-e P= pz;
(a) Calculate dipole moment of this charge distribution.
(b) Find potential for this distribution and give one line conclusion about potential.

Question 1: (4+4+2)

An electromagnetic plane wave is propagating in vacuum has a magnetic field given by

The wave encounters an infinite, dielectric sheet at x = 0 of such a thickness that half of
the energy of the wave is reflected and the other half is transmitted and emerges on the
far side of the sheet. The +k ˆ direction is out of the paper.
(a) What condition between a and b must be met in order for this wave to satisfy
Maxwell’s equations?
(b) What is the magnitude and direction of the E field of the incoming wave?

Question 2:

(A) Two insulating dielctric slabs having €1, €2 and µ1, µ2 are bounded together. Slab 1 has E1,H1
at angle Ɵ1 with surface normal. What are E2, H2 and Ɵ2 if surface charges at boundary is non
zero.
(B) On basis of which equation orthogonality of E and B can be proved.
