1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to make all personnel on the Site aware of their
responsibilities for ensuring that all their activities, with regards to hygiene and
housekeeping, are performed with the aim of maintaining as high a standard as is
reasonably practicable.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
The HSE Site Manager shall be responsible for ensuring that all personnel are
maintaining high standards of hygiene and housekeeping and shall monitor this by regular
inspections. They shall also be responsible for issuing instructions and training as
required.
All Personnel on the site shall ensure they are aware of and abide by the requirements
enclosed within this procedure. Anyone present on a company installation shall conform to
elementary personal hygiene standards such as: regular showers, changing clothes,

accessible. Access routes to safety, fire fighting and survival equipment must be
kept clean and unobstructed at all times.
Paints and flammable materials shall be isolated and stored in specially
designated places. Missing or damaged guardrails shall be reported
immediately. Oil spills must be cleaned up immediately.
The following is a summary of basic housekeeping precautions:
Site access roads are to be kept clear and unobstructed at all times.
Adequate signs shall be established throughout the site to indicate the
various areas i.e. office, lay-down areas, fabrication areas, as well as
clear project signs at the entrance to the site.
Safe means of access and egress and escape routes shall be kept clear
and unobstructed at all times, and pathways for pedestrians should be
clearly marked and distinct from vehicular travel routes
Parking facilities shall be provided in clearly defined areas.
Storage areas shall be adequate for all materials and equipment to be
stored, and should be clearly marked. Where necessary they shall be
securely fenced off for security reasons.
Site and storage area fencing shall be regularly inspected, in co-
ordination with the Site Company Security personnel (if applicable).
Improper stacking and storage of materials is prohibited.
Stored materials shall not protrude into walkways (especially at eye level),
and should be well clear of permanent or temporary structures.
Storage and waste collection areas shall be conveniently located where
the work force will use them.
Books and papers shall be kept in proper places (e.g. files, folders, etc.)
and not permitted to lie haphazardly around the offices.
Areas around working machines shall be kept clean and free of
obstructions.
An area for scrap materials shall be allocated.
Decks/floors shall be kept clear of slippery substances (e.g. oils etc.)
which can cause slipping or falling injuries.

Tools, etc. shall not be left on overhead work platforms, where they can
fall and strike personnel below.
While not in use, all power driven construction equipment shall have the
ignition locked and keys removed, or made immobile by disconnecting the
battery or by any other means.
Site electrical power shall be de-energised at night, except where it is
required for specific lighting facilities or by use by a night watchman.
Any excavation or obstruction of any kind likely to create a hazard to
vehicular or pedestrian traffic at night will be adequately lit and signs
posted.
All welfare facilities shall be maintained to a high standard of cleanliness
and hygiene; i.e. canteen or eating area, rest areas, toilet and washing
facilities, first aid facilities and safe smoking areas provided where
necessary in a hazardous work site environment.
Poor housekeeping is the cause of a large number of injuries to personnel.
4.4 Pollution
All waste materials shall be disposed of in an approved manner. It is
forbidden to throw any article on the ground on the site. All items of waste shall
be placed in receptacles provided for disposal.
No petroleum products are to be intentionally dumped on the site. In the event that
petroleum products are accidentally split on the site notify the Site Construction Manager
and/or HSE Site Manager, giving sufficient details so that the necessary steps can be
taken to disperse it.
