Unit -1
Q.1. What do you understand by stress concentration in tension, bending and torsion. Also State
the causes of stress concentration.
Q.2. Discuss the mechanism of fatigue failure.
Q.3. Define the following terms:
i. Notch sensitivity
ii. Cyclic loading
iii. S-N curve
iv. Soderberg equation and its application
v. Goodman and Modified Goodman’s diagram and equation
Q.4. Define Loading factor, Size factor and Surface factor.
Q.5. A machine component is subjected to a flexural stress which fluctuates between + 300
MN/m2 and - 150 MN/m2. Determine the value of minimum ultimate strength according to
i. Gerber Relation
ii. Modified Goodman relation
iii. Soderberg relation
Take yield strength = 0.55 Ultimate strength; Endurance strength = 0.5 Ultimate
strength and factor of safety = 2.
Q.6. A circular bar of 500 mm length is supported freely at its two ends. It is acted upon by a
central cyclic load having a minimum value of 20 kN and a maximum value of 50 kN. Determine
the diameter of bar by taking a factor of safety 1.5, size effect of 0.85, surface finish factor of
0.9. The material properties of bar is given by: Ultimate strength of 650 Mpa, yield strength of
500 Mpa and Endurance strength of 350 Mpa.

Unit -2
Q.1. State the function of shaft, axle and spindle and discuss the requirement of shaft material.
Also discuss the design of shaft under combined bending and twisting moment.
Q.2 A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/8 is required to transmit 600 kW at 110 rpm., the
maximum torque being 20% greater than mean. The shearing stress is not to exceed 62 MN/m 2
and twist in length of three metres is not to exceed 1.4 degrees. Determine the diameter of the
shaft. Assume modulus of rigidity for shaft material as 84 GN/m2.
Q.3. A shaft carries a 900 N pulley in the centre of two ball bearings which are 1800 mm apart.
The pulley is keyed to the shaft and receives 40 kW of power at 150 rpm. The power is
transmitted from the shaft through a flexible coupling just outside the bearing. The belt drive is
horizontal and the sum of the belt tensions is 8000 N. Calculate the diameter of the shaft if
permissible stress in bending is 90 N/mm2 and in shear it is 45 N/mm2.
Q.4. What is the function of keys and coupling. How are the keys and coupling classified? Draw
neat sketches of different types of keys, coupling and state their applications. Also discuss the
design of sunk key in detail.
Q.5 It is required to design a square key for fixing a gear on the shaft which transmits 10 kW
power at 720 rpm. The shaft and key are both made of plain carbon steel C-45 and factor of
safety is 3.0.
Q.6. A cast iron flange coupling is used to connect two co-axial shafts to transmit 175 kW at 150
rpm. The key and shaft are to be made of same material for which permissible shearing stree is
68 Mpa and compressive strength is 120 Mpa. The steel bolts may be subjected to maximum
shear stress of 25 N/mm2 and the permissible shearing stress in cast iron is 7.5 N/mm 2. Design
protected type flange coupling.

Q.1. What is the function of spring. Classify springs with their neat sketch. Also explain
following terms related to spring.
i. Spring rate
ii. Spring index
iii. Solid length
iv. Free length
v. Pitch
vi. Nipping
Q.2. Define the Buckling and surge in springs. Also define full length leave and graduated leaves
of a leaf spring.
Q.3. Design a close coiled helical compression springs for a service load ranging from 2250 N to
2750 N. The axial deflection of the spring for the load range is 6 mm. Assume a spring index of
5. The permissible shear stress intensity is 420 Mpa and modulus of rigidity, G = 84 kN/mm2.
Neglect the effect of stress concentration. Draw a fully dimensioned sketch of
the spring, showing details of the finish of the end coils.
Q.4. Design a valve spring of a petrol engine for the following operating conditions:
Spring load when the valve is open = 400 N
Spring load when the valve is closed = 250 N
Maximum inside diameter of spring = 25 mm
Length of the spring when the valve is open = 40 mm
Length of the spring when the valve is closed = 50 mm
Maximum permissible shear stress = 400 Mpa
Q.5. What is the function of power screw. Classified the screw. Also derive the equation of
efficiency of square threaded screw. Also discuss the design of power screw.
Q.6. A screw jack is to lift a load of 80 kN through a height of 400 mm. The elastic strength of
screw material in tension and compression is 300 Mpa and in shear 120 mpa. The material for
nut is phosphor bronze for which the elastic limit may be taken as 100 Mpa in tension, 90 mpa in
compression and 80 mpa in shear. The bearing pressure between the nut and the screw is not to
exceed 18 N/mm2. Design and draw the screw jack.

Unit -4
Q.1. Explain the function of clutches in power transmission. Classify the clutches and write the
construction, working with neat sketch and establish the formula for the frictional torque with
their theories. (Such as single plate clutch, cone clutch and centrifugal clutch)
Q.2. A plate clutch having a single driving plate with contact surfaces on each side is required to
transmit 110 kW at 1250 rpm. The outer diameter of the contact surface is to be 300 mm. the
coefficient of friction is 0.4. Assuming a uniform pressure of 0.17 N/mm 2. Determine the inner
diameter of the friction surface.
Q.3. Design a cone clutch to transmit a power of 50 kW at a rated speed of 700 rpm. Also
determine:
i. The axial force capacity
ii. The axial force necessary to transmit the torque.
iii. The axial force necessary to engage the cone clutch
Q.4. What is break. State the classification of brakes with their application. Define self actuating
and self locking brake. Also discuss working principle of internal expanding brake with their
neat sketch.
Q.5. A simple band brake operates on a drum 600 mm diameter and running at 200 rpm. The
coefficient of friction is 0.25. The brake band has a contact of 270º and one end is fastened to a
fixed pin and the other end to the brake arm 125 mm from the fixed pin. The straight brake arm
is 750 mm long and is placed perpendicular to the diameter that bisects the angle of contact.
Determine –

i. What is the pull necessary on the end of the brake arm to stop the wheel if 35 kW
is being absorbed? What is the direction for this minimum pull?

ii. What width of steel band of 2.5 mm thick is required for this brake if the
maximum tensile stress is not to exceed 50 Mpa?

Q.6. In a band and block brake, the band is lined with 14 blocks each of which subtends an angle
of 20 º at the centre of drum. The effective radius of the drum is 500 mm and it rotates clockwise
at 500 rpm. The coefficient of friction between block and drum is 0.25. The brake torque
capacity of the brake is required to be 4000 N-m. The ends of the band are connected to lever
such that the end carrying higher tension is attached to the lever at a distance of 150 mm from
fulcrum and is perpendicular to the lever while the other end is connected to fulcrum. What
effort is required on the free end of lever at a distance of 1 m from the fulcrum. Calculate the
effect if drum rotates counterclockwise. Also calculate the power dissipated in the form of heat.

Q.1. What is the function of bearing. Classify the bearing and write the types of the sliding and
rolling contact bearing
Q.2. Discuss hydrodynamic and hydrostatic theory of lubrication, its application and derive
Reynold’s equation of bearing design.
Q.3. State brief about selection of ball and roller bearing and factors affecting bearing life. Also
write the design procedure of journal bearing.
Q.4. Explain Briefly about Boundary lubrication in journal bearing and its properties.
Q.5. Define the following terms:
i. Bearing characteristic number and Bearing modulus for journal bearings
ii. Sommerfeld number
iii. Life of a Bearing
iv. Dynamic load rating for rolling contact bearing under variable loads
Q.6. Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump from the following data:
Load on the journal = 20000 N; Speed of the journal = 900 rpm; type of oil is SAE 10,
for which the absolute viscosity at 55º C = 0.017kg/m-s; Ambient temperature of oil = 15.5º C;
Maximum bearing pressure for the pump = 1.5 N/mm2.
Calculate also mass of the lubricating oil required for artificial cooling, if rise of
temperature of oil be limited to 10 º C. Heat dissipation coefficient = 1232 W/m2/º C
Q.7. Find the rating life of the 50 mm bore light series ball journal bearing under a 6800 N radial
load at 600 rpm. The load is out of balance and therefore rotates with inner ring. There is no
shock loading.
NOTE: All the students are requested that practice all types of numerical problems
from the exam point of view.
