The winners were anno unced during the Gala Awards Ceremo ny in the Santiago Paperchase, and Chile Concha y Toro ASI
the fact that all three to p winners co me fro m newer co o l-climate regio ns sho ws the judges’
prio rities and preference fo r inno vative, unique, and refreshing wines. Michael Co x, Wines o f Chile’s
UK Directo r said, “These results represent a clear reflectio n o f the exciting trends that mo dern
Chilean winemaking has been fo llo wing in the recent past-co o ler climate sites, special terro irs, o ld
vines, and inno vative varietal blends. To have all these styles fro m o ne co untry reinfo rces Chile’s
diverse credentials, and makes it the envy o f the wine wo rld.”

This year’s Awards bro ke with traditio n and instead o f inviting a panel fro m just o ne co untry, it
bro ught 13 judges fro m 10 different markets, including the finest palates fro m Chile’s majo r target
markets. This year’s distinguished panel co nsisted o f: Jo rge Lucki (Brazil), Shari Mo gk-Edwards

(Canada), Franço is Primeau (Canada), Jeannie Cho Lee (China), Kyo ungja (Co rinne) Eo m (Ko rea),
To mo ko Ebisawa (Japan), Andreas Larsso n (Sweden), Steven Spurrier (United Kingdo m), Oz
Clarke (United Kingdo m), Jo sh Reyno lds (United States), Jo sh Greene (United States), and Michael
Schachner (United States), as well as Chile’s o wn master So mmelier, Hécto r Vergara.

After three days o f tasting, they awarded medals to 6 0 % o f the mo re than 6 20 wines fro m 110
wineries that participated in Chile’s mo st impo rtant wine event o f the year. The final results returned
41 go ld medals, 131 silver medals, and 19 7 bro nze medals, and 15 Best o f Catego ry tro phies,
which no t o nly validates the quality o f Chilean wine, but also helps raise the co untry’s visibility in
their respective markets and strengthen the Co untry Image.

Wines o f Chile Managing Directo r Juan So mavía said that “inviting an internatio nal panel rather
than co ntinuing with the single market panels we have used in the past allo ws us to o pen new
spaces in Chile’s prio rity markets and pro ceed in acco rdance with the recently launched Wine
Indust ry St rat e gic Plan f o r 20 20 , which aims to po sitio n Chilean wines in a wo rld-class
catego ry by strengthen the image o f Chilean wines and po sitio n them in a wo rld class catego ry. ”

Chile’s wine industry has set the go al to beco me the Num be r One pro duce r o f sust ainable
and dive rse pre m ium wine s f ro m t he Ne w Wo rld, reaching expo rts o f bo ttled wine o f US$3
billio n by the year 20 20 .

Sustainability is ano ther impo rtant issue in the

Plan 20 20 . “We are co nvinced that we must
embrace sustainability in every o ne o f the
industry’s pro ductio n areas in o rder to fully face
the majo r enviro nmental challenges that lie
ahead. Making the mo ve to sustainability by
caring fo r the enviro nment, o ur wo rkers, and o ur
co mmunities is o ne o f the fundamental pillars o f
the new Plan,” said Juan So mavia.

As evidence o f that co mmitment, the 8 th Annual Wines o f Chile Awards is 10 0 % Carbo n Neutral. As
a means o f o ffsetting the CO2 emissio ns asso ciated with the event and reduce its carbo n fo o tprint
by do nating 30 0 fruit trees to establish a park in o ne o f Santiago ’s po o rer neighbo rho o ds. This
much-needed green space, o r “green lung,” will pro duce o xygen fo r many years and
simultaneo usly pro vide the co mmunity with a new gathering place and so urce o f entertainment.

Ho w co rrect is it to call a winery with the valley name o r vice versa? Isn’t this a bit misleading fo r
the co nsumer who in 9 9 % o f the cases do esn’t kno w by heart who is who ?
