Subject/Object. Improving individual competence and Performance in Language


Communication.

1. Competence and performance in L2 require commitment, dedication and determination to


one's deportment, reading and writing skills. A language learner is a language teacher of
himself or herself. A language teacher is a lifelong learner, particularly where he or she is
a non-native of the target language. This is our plight you and I. We are non-native users
of English as a medium and so it is imperative that our professional image will in part be
elevated by the improving mastery of the medium. The lawyer’s image, the teacher's
performance, and any public performer’s profile, will be further elevated by the quality of
the public performers! Determined professionals of the legal discipline would do very
well by putting first things first! Upon a sound foundation, the walls will withstand the
storms of tomorrow. Dear intending lawyers, Mind Your English [MYE] upon that, the
legal profession is certain take root and prosper.
2. Learning is essentially individually focused! An idiom familiar to one is exotic to
another! One man’s delicacy may taste bitter to another and attractive or even intriguing
to a third. The individual discerns and emulates as another individual is insensitive to the
process and a third couldn't care less. The platform (life) is full of ridges and ditches!
Language use and value rated variously! The starting point, the pace stimulated by the
need is not the same! The standard, the interest, the pace is not even! My earnest appeal
to you all is to love proper language use, master it and success in law will come forth.
3. Language learning of all disciplines is feasible and optional if it is geared to individual
aptitude needs, aspiration! A group of in lording lawyers may/and definitely do have
individual aptitude and lenses! Equally, we are all second language learners i.e. We
continue to learn the English Language until we are switched off! Life and Learning are
continuous. As Learners in the art, there are aspects of language that we may be more
proficient in, there are others that require improvement in order to facilitate over
professional growth and Development! Competence and performance imply
consolidating the strong aspects of over performance, identifying inherent challenges and
dealing with them so that we relish over deportment and impress our inclusion with
clarity fluency and well selected content. That is the challenge that the professional
agenda with a practice will address.
4. To communicate completely requires of performer to master the key elements at the
aural-oral, reading and writing levels. True, we do exercise each of these skills rather
ruefully, with some results, but these are the divine gifts that will propel us all forward!
To operate at a higher rung of the success ladder, we need to propel ourselves for greater
achievement and higher level of attainment in the life career! Prospects await us let us
grapple with the game
5. To exploit the study opportunities and skills practice, we shall operate in study groups in
which all individual skills will attain ample opportunity and practice. In groups we shall
patiently listen to one another, we shall speak to one another, we shall read and make
presentations! and we shall write individually and present to groups for the group to listen
and make suggestion for improvement. This done throughout the semester will accord
some opportunity for every individual to perform individually and in a group with
confidence and improving competence! Communication is both individual and social. A
manifestation of the inner potential that is complimented by friends and colleagues is no
doubt on edifying experiences.
6. A wide range of materials identified and selected by members of this class will constitute
the bulk of the Literature. Communication is thinking, identifying, analyzing and
appreciating; - hopefully thus processes leading to imitation through critical appreciation
of varieties of language use!
