Chapter 8 Section A: 3- and 4-Digit Addition and Subtraction with Re-

grouping; Patterns in an Input/Output Table
During this section your child will be learning the following concepts and skills:

• solve addition and subtraction problems with a missing amount with 2-,3-, and 4-digit numbers that
regroup to the tens and hundreds , for example: 47 + __ = 124 (77)

• use an input/output table with a rule (x10) to identify and show a growing pattern

child is learning
do part • Look at prices in newspaper ads or on the
undo whole Internet. Discuss the cost of two, three, and four
known change items and how multiplication can be used to
unknown line graph identify the cost of multiple items, e.g. $30 for
a one book. Multiply the amount for 2 books:
regroup input
$30 x 2 = $60.
subtract output
• Solve addition and subtraction problems with
larger amounts. Use expanded form as a strategy
to add and subtract amounts in each place value.
Use cereal pieces, popcorn, or similar to add the
amounts. See the example below.

24 + 32 = __

1. Expanded Form: 24 = 20 + 4
32 = 30 + 2

2. Add place value amounts: 20 + 4

30 + 2
50 + 6
3. Add sums: 50 + 6 = 56

Chapter 8 Section B: Solving Multiplication Problems; Multiplication

Number Properties
During this section your child will be learning the following concepts and skills:

• estimate and solve 1-digit multiplication problems by 10

• estimate and solve division problems by 10

• apply multiplication skills by: using a multiplication chart to describe patterns, make arrays in terms of
multiplication, and demonstrate the Commutative Property and Associative Property of Multiplication

• Identify factors (numbers in gray) and multiples
(numbers in white) on Multiplication Chart below.
Commutative Property of Multiplication
Associative Property of Multiplication • Play Factor or Multiple game.

divisor Is it a factor of 20? Is it greater than 5?
quotient 3. Play continues until number is guessed.

Chapter 8 Section C: 3- and 4- digit Start Unknown Addition &

Subtraction; Area; Volume; Measured Amounts
During this section your child will be learning the following concepts and skills:

• solve addition and subtraction problems with a missing start with 3-, and 4-digit numbers that regroup
to the tens and hundreds, for example: ___ + 145 = 321 (176)

• work with volume and measured amounts: determine volume of a box with cubes, and identify liquid
units of measure: cup, pint, half-gallon, gallon

do you need to fill the cup to the top?”

Chapter 8 Section D: Solving Division Problems; Liquid Metric

Measurements
During this section your child will be learning the following concepts and skills:

• solve division problems with 2-digit amounts

• use the relationship between multiplication and division: by identifying multiples and factors, and solv-
ing multiplication and division problems with a missing amount

• measure and estimate liquid amounts in millimeters and liters

factors estimate • Play Factor Hunt game. Write each: 6, 8, 24, 35,
multiple millimeter 48, & 72 on a card. Place face down on table.
liter 1. Player 1 picks card and finds on Multiplication
Chart to identify the factors. Player 1 identifies
largest factor for points.
2. Write division equation with the multiple and a
factor. Player 1 solves for bonus points (other factor).
3. Continue play.
