Bee Hotel Hotel Year 5 - Sustainability goal 15: Life on land
The Problem: Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem. It is
estimated that a third of the food we eat is dependant on bee pollination. Without bees, the world is in trouble. The bee population around this area is currently on a decline and the school needs your help!
TASK: Your task is to design and build a bee habitat
that encourages the bees to stay in the area, and for their population to grow. The habitat must include a bee hotel, and a small flower garden that can be placed within the school grounds. The bee hotel must be waterproof, secure, and allow easy access for the bees to enter and exit. The flower garden must include two types of flowers that the bees can use to pollinate.

Materials: Generating designs: Using the - Paper straws, available materials, you must - nesting tubes come up with 2 possible designs - Rolled up paper of a bee habitat. Your designs - Weatherproof house (milk must be annotated with carton, large drink bottle, - what materials you chose large tin can). and why you chose them - Sticks or other natural - which flowers you chose materials that can be and why. found around the school. You will then choose a design - Recycled Pots or you wish to make and indicate containers on your drawing why you chose - Soil that design - Flower seeds
Evaluation: The evaluation of your project will take the form of
a 3 minute presentation to your peers.
Presentation: Your presentation must include the following:
- an explanation of what materials and flowers you chose and why - Display your original design and discuss any changes that were made and why - A reflection of how successful your bee habitat was in consideration to its function, aesthetics and materials used in the production
Project management and time: You will be learning about
bees and their importance for the duration of the next 8 weeks. 4 of the next 8 lessons will be dedicated solely to the design, production and evaluation of your bee habitat.
