TUTORIAL # 1
Energy and Energy Balance
Chapter 7
Answer all problems. Clearly state the basis of calculations and assumptions
1. If a normal diet is reduced by 500 kcal/day, how many days does one take to lose one
Ibm of body fat, assuming body fat contains approximately 7700 kcal/kg. ? (~ 7 days)
2. An automobile weighing 1134 kg is traveling at 90 km per hour when the brakes are
suddenly applied bringing the vehicle to a stop. After the brakes have cooled to the
ambient temperature, how much heat (in kJ) has been transferred from the brakes to the
surroundings? (~ -355 kJ)
3. A gas containing in a piston cylinder is compressed, requiring 7.65 L-bar of work.
Calculate the amount of work in Joule. (765 J)
4. Saturated steam at 100°C is heated to 400°C. Use the steam tables to determine the
required heat input (J/s) if a continuous stream flowing at 100 kg/s undergoes the process
at constant pressure. (6.02 x 107 J/s)
5. A 10.0-m3 rigid tank contains steam at 275°C and 15.0 bar. The tank and its contents are
cooled until the pressure drops to 1.2 bar. Some of the steam condenses in the process.
6. Air at a flow rate of 50 kg/hr is compressed adiabatically from 1 bar and 0 C to 3 bar and
25 C. The velocity of the air stream entering the compressor is 5.0 m/s. The velocity of
the air stream exiting the compressor is 60.0 m/s. The air stream exits the compressor 3
m higher than it enters. During the compression the specific enthalpy of the air is
increased by 24.97 kJ/kg. Calculate the work (kW) done on the compressor. (~ - 0.37 kW)
7. A hot-water stream at 80°C enters a mixing chamber with a mass flow rate of 0.5 kg/s
where it is mixed with a stream of cold water at 20°C. If it is desired that the mixture
leave the chamber at 42°C, determine the mass flow rate of the cold-water stream. Assume
all the streams are at a pressure of 250 kPa. Draw and label a process flow diagram for
the process. (0.865 kg/s)
8. A superheated steam at 40 bar absolute and 450oC flows at a rate of 250 kg/min to an
adiabatic turbine, where it expands to 5 bar. The turbine develops 1500 kW. From the
turbine the steam flows to a heater, where it is reheated isobarically to its initial
temperature. Neglect kinetic energy changes.
a. Draw and label a process flow diagram for the above process.
b. Write an energy balance on the turbine and determine the outlet steam temperature. (~
255oC)
c. Write an energy balance on the heater and determine the required the input (kW) to
the steam. (~1700 kW)
