What’s New

Introduction:

As one of the most popular games in the Philippine archipelago, Sungka is played by
Filipinos both young and old. Their traditional game with became a witness the Philippine
civilization across the centuries has become their pastime, may it be with friends or with their
families although it originally started as an amusement for ladies only.
Nature and Background of the Game:

Sungka is an ancient Filipino game. Its history can be traced back to the 17th
century. The Jesuit priest, Father Jose Sanchez, first describe the game in his dictionary of
the Visayan (Cebuano) language in 1692...He also said that the game
was played with “seashells” in a wooden boat-liked board.
Scholars say that the board game may have evolved in Egypt from counters used
for accounting and stock-taking. Evidences of this boards have also been found in ancient
Sumeria. As for the origin of the term “Sungka” historian found relics of an identical game as
a stream in Indonesia.

Do you know how to play Sungka? Study the next activitiesfor you to know and do the tasks
given.

Sungka

 It is a game played by two players by using a solid carved wood with two rows of
seven circular hole and two large holes at both ends called house (bahay).
 Forty-nine small stones, marbles, pebbles, seeds, or even shells can be used in
holes that are alternately out, except in the house.
 The two players hold each sides of the rows as their territory.
 It is also a turn-based game, to win a Sungka the player’s aim of the
game is to capture as many shells and place them into “ulo” (head).

Sungkaan

 It is placed horizontally between the two players and each player has seven
houses in front of him and the heads should be at the far ends to the left and
right.

How do you play Sungka?

Sungka requires two players. Each player controls the seven holes on his side of the board
and owns the “head” to his right. The goal is to accumulate as many pieces in your own
“head”.

Activity
Note: (If no Sungka Board available) Make an improvised Sungka and follow the
steps below.

1. Using a table or a floor. Get a marker like chalk or crayons.


2. Draw two rows of seven small circles and two large circles at both ends called house.
3. Use any 49 small pieces of shells, seeds, stones or pebbles using counter for playing
thegame.
4. Start to play and follow the rules and mechanics of the game.
