Major factors challenging the health for young people (age ranges from 16 to
24) in the UK and the respective solutions for these factors
Abstract
Evaluation of the determinants that are responsible for the harmful effect on the health of the
young group in the UK and the long term approaches that can prevent these factors are the
principal purpose behind preparing the report. The report can be classified as the positivism
theory of research philosophy as it is based on substantial data and the deductive approach has
been used here through the deep observation of each data collected from the secondary sources
like- interviews, newspapers, etc. The materials of the research have categorised it as a case
study and a mixture of qualitative and quantitative approach has been operated here. In the UK,
young individuals are getting affected by the actions of challenging sources and many of them
are dying out of physical or psychological sickness. So the trends and the ways to get out these
problems are scrutinised through this research so that the UK can find the perfect solution.

Task 2: Project Report

Title of the Project
“Major factors challenging the health for young people (age range from 16 to 24) in the UK and
the respective solutions for these factors”

Background and Rationale

The total number of residents living in the UK was 66.4 million and among that approximately
23% of them are young residents aged between 16-24 years old (Worldometer, 2020) In the year
2018, the youth consisted almost 16% of the total population in the world which is equivalent to
about 1.6 billion (UN.org, 2020). The young group of people are dealing with a variety of
challenges regarding physical, psychological and environmental causes. If the young fall a victim
to such problems, the UK will have to see a great loss in economic and financial perspectives. In
order to understand the current situation of the young in the UK in the case of handling
challenges of health and to investigate the ways to prevent it, this particular research has been
conducted.

Aim of the Report

The research is conveyed with the motive of evaluating the effect of different factors on the
health of young individuals in the UK and the necessary initiatives taken with a view to
preventing these trends.

Objectives of the Report

The below-highlighted objectives will work as the basis of conducting the research-

 To achieve authentic knowledge about challenging factors for health and its impression
on the young generation in the UK.
 To inquire about the reasons that are responsible for getting influenced by these factors.
 To dig out the best measures that can help the young people in the UK to get rid of these
problems.
2

Research Questions
After evaluating the above-mentioned aim and objectives of the report, the research will be
carried on by the following questions-

 How the young group in the UK are getting attacked by the challenging factors
 What are the initiatives that have been taken to protect the young from these unwanted
challenges

Research Methodology
Research philosophy: Research philosophy is a popular part that serves the goal of the research
through better data accumulation and presentation process. It is segmented into four components
which are known as positivism, pragmatism, realism and interpretivism (Jackson, 2018). In this
report, the motive of the research is served properly by exploring an accurate answer to the
questions using substantive data and so the positivism theory is applied here.

Research approach: Research approach is the step by step process of exercising acquired data
into the making process of the report. In general, there are two basic ways of approaching
research which is categorised in deductive and inductive approaches (Jackson, 2018). This
research has not been conducted with a view to striking out something. However, it covers the
investigation of data and evaluates it on the basis of existing theories and also focuses on finding
the perfect solution to the questions related to the research. So the perfect approach that goes
with the research is the deductive approach.

Research Strategy: Research strategy is the component of research that gives a conceptual idea
about the authorization of a problem by presenting it using appropriate techniques. Here, the
report is made by examining the original consequences related to the issue of young generation
in the UK who suffer from health problems and the ways of getting rid of the factors related to it
and so it can be considered as the case study.

Data collection method and source: Secondary data has been used to prepare this report. In the
case of this research, the information has been obtained through many sources, like- published
3

articles, newspapers, journals, interviews, and so on. So the type of data used in this report is
secondary data.

Data analysis approach: Data analysis approach is a very important part of analysing the
information in research and so these are grouped into two which are qualitative and quantitative
approaches. In this research, the qualitative approach has been used, however, a mix of both the
approaches has covered in the making of the report by the implementation of charts, graphs, etc.

Limitation: The major limitation in preparing the research is the fewer sources of obtaining data
and the chance of getting biased data as well.

Literature Review
There is a range of authentic sources that gives a brief knowledge about the factors and its
suffering to the people of the UK. These factors put a negative impact on the young generation in
the UK and these topics are highlighted through various articles, journals, and many other
sources.

The factors to affect the health of the young:

Evans (2017) described that there are a number of negative and positive traits and attributes of
the society, environment and culture that helps the growth of an individual, especially in the
phase of adolescent and adulthood, however, the negative trends put a permanent effect on the
young that hinders their lifestyle.

The social factors affecting the youth worldwide:

Chase (2016) explained that social factors are the trends that subsist in the environment and
culture and enable the functioning activities of an individual while he or she grows up. He also
mentioned that about 8.9 million young adults were facing health issues in 2016 due to various
social challenges which include unemployment, violence, unavailability of education, parental
guidance, etc. British Journal on Youth (2020) mentioned that in the case of education, the
approximate number of high school dropouts was 142 million globally in 2018. Besides, about
71 million young were facing unemployment problems in the same year. Again, it briefly
4

mentioned that the given statistics show the societal limitations that youth go through every year
and makes them suffer from various health obligations like- depression, suicidal tendency, and
so on.

The environmental determinants influencing the youth globally:

Evans (2017) narrated that environmental factors are the origin of health issues as it is linked
with an individual’s overall activities since birth and can influence the day to day operation
through creating limitations at any time phase. Karvonen and Rahkonen (2019) pointed out that
every year almost 1.7 million people die due to the lack of safe water among which about 0.7
million is estimated to be youth. Air pollution is the reason for the death of 0.35 million young
individuals annually. Besides, he also said that malaria, climate change, etc. as the causes behind
the health-related issues that the young generation go through.

Physical sources putting impact on youth health in various countries:

WHO.int (2020) showed in their report that physical sources of obligations to health consists of
those activities which are associated with constitutional operations. It also pointed out that less
ignorance of a balanced diet, less exercise, consumption of alcohol, smoking, addiction to drugs,
etc. are primary reasons for health issues. 1 out of 4 individual in youth do not exercise regularly
and the approximate rate of the inactive young group was 80% all over the world in the
timeframe of 2017.

Recommendations by the experts:

LOW (2018) suggested that exercise is the best possible way of getting rid of such limitations.
Moreover, food items enriched with calcium and a balanced diet must be eaten daily. The
recommended amount of calcium for young people is 700 mg daily which will increase the
stamina of the bones. Besides, perfect absorption of vitamin D is a must. Maintaining a perfect
weight, exercising regularly and quitting smoking and drinking alcohol will also help one to stay
healthy.

Results and Discussion

In Britain, the young group are facing many difficulties due to the increasing problems of health
all over the country. In this country, 1 out of 6 young individuals is going through mental health
issues because of a variety of physical or psychological distress. Again, about 1-2 million young
working people in the UK are also falling victim to this kind of problems. The following chart
showing the rate of young individuals affected by health challenges in the UK will give
information about the increase in this regard in the past few years-

Figure 1: The Rate of Young People Facing Health Issues in the UK

Source: Self-designed

The above graph represents the gradual increment in the number of youth suffering from
challenges regarding health in the UK. The number was not much high in the year 2015 which
increased and became 5.3 million in the year 2017. This flow of growth did not stop and turned
into 7.1 million in the year 2019.

The average number of individuals undergoing the challenges is 5.8 million from 2015 to 2019
and the range of individuals going through this situation is 3.1 million. Here the maximum score
6

of people affected by the problems is in the year 2019, whereas, the minimum one is in 2016
which clearly reflects the growth in this regard and it has become a highly alarming matter for
the UK.

In the UK, NHS has been working for a long period in order to prevent the challenging factors
that the country is facing so that the young can stay safe. It is investing the allocated money from
CCG’s to ensure the societal health care of the young generation. The citizens of the UK do not
have to pay the original costs of medicines and prescriptions. The cleanliness of the roads and
the cities are also ensured so that environmental issues can be reduced to some extent.
7

Conclusion and Recommendation

The report has been mainly made to concentrate on the dominance of challenging trends over the
young people in the UK so that its detrimental effects can be examined to get rid of it. As it has
become a common issue among the young group and is increasing at a rapid rate, the following
techniques can be applied in their day to day life to avoid it.

Firstly, a balanced diet must be maintained by the young group on a daily basis.

Secondly, proper exercise and medication can prevent this disease.

Thirdly, young people have to try to maintain cleanliness.

At last, quitting smoking and alcohol consumption can help to reduce the possibility of getting
attacked by these factors.

By the proper implementation of these tools, the youth of the UK can get rid of this problem at a
high extent.
