25kV Current Transformer

Calculations for operation at 1600meter Altitude above MSL (Mean Sea Level)
With reference to above, please be informed below the changes to be made if Current Transformer
is operating at 1600 meter altitude above MSL (mean sea level):
1) Temperature rise at high altitude as per IS2705‐Part 1:
As per clause 7.2.1.2 of this standard “If a transformer is specified for service at an altitude in
excess of 1000 m and tested at an altitude below 1 000 m, the limits of temperature rise given
in Table 2 shall be reduced by the following amounts for each 100 m, the altitude at the
operating site exceeds 1000 m.”.
a) Oil-immersed transformers — 0.4 percent,
b) Dry-type transformers — 0.5 percent.
In this case temperature rise reduction would be: (1600 – 1000)*0.4 = 2.4 Deg. C.
Hence allowable top oil temperature rise and winding temp rise values will be reduced from
40 and 50 Deg. C to 37.6 and 47.6 Deg. C.
2) Requirement of External Insulation
25KV system is 1- phase which is not standard system voltage level as per IS &IEC.
The 25KV 1-phase traction system shall be converted to three phase system as per railways
norm which is as follows:
Conversion of 25kV single phase system voltage to three phase system voltage
Description Value
Traction Nominal Voltage (1-phase) 25kV
1-phase to 3-phase factor 1.732
Highest system Voltage (1-phase) 27.5kV
3-phase Nominal system Voltage =25*1.732=43.3kV
3-Phase highest system Voltage =27.5*1.732= 47.63kV

Calculation of Altitude correction factor (Ref: Clause No. 2.2.1 of IEC61869-1)

Altitude correction factor k = e m(H‐1000)/8150
Where
m = 1 for power frequency and lightening impulse voltage
H = altitude = 1600
k = e 1(1600‐1000)/8150 = 1.076
