Activity 5: OBSERVING WATER’S COLOR

Directions: Read and follow the procedures carefully. Then write down your observations.

Materials: 3 transparent glasses or basins, cold water, tap water and hot water, food color,
coffee, juice or any available substitute

OVERVIEW
This activity will help the learners better understand the relationship between
heat and temperature. The learners will observe and record their observations
on how the molecules of the colored material (like coffee, food color or juice)
disperse in water of different temperatures.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this activity, the learners are expected to;

1. Relate heat and temperature; and

2. Differentiate heat and temperature using scientific evidence.

PROCEDURE
1. The table below shows the Initial and Final Temperature of water in 3 containers in
Set-up 1. Initially, all of them has half amount of cold water with the given
temperature (15°C).
2. Then, half the amount of cold water was added to Container 1, tap water to
Container 2, and hot water to Container 3. After that, the temperature of the water
was recorded for each setup. (Note: The temperature readings were already
provided below since thermometer may not be available in every home.)
3. Your task is to fill in the temperature difference (Tf- Ti) in the fourth column.
4. In Setup 2, you need to demonstrate and observe the simple task.
5. Prepare 3 transparent containers, dropper, cold water, tap water, hot water, food
color (or other available colored substance like coffee or juice).
6. Pour an equal amount of cold water in Container 1, tap water in Container 2, and
hot water in Container 3.
7. Put a drop of colored substance in each container simultaneously.
8. Observe carefully and compare the movement of the colored substance. Write your
observations in the data table similar to the given one.

GUIDE QUESTIONS

1. In which container/s is heat transfer taking place?

Containers 2 and 3
2. How is the amount of heat transferred related to the change or difference
in temperature?
Heat transfer moves from a hotter object (higher temperature) to a cooler
object (lower temperature). In container 2 and 3, the temperature of the
poured water is higher than 15°C while in container 1, the temperature of
poured water is same as 15°C. The temperature in container 2 and 3
changed because there's a higher and lower temperature connection.
3. In which container did the color scatter the fastest? the slowest?
Fastest- Container 3 Slowest- Container 1
4. How can you relate temperature to the rate of scattering and kinetic
energy of the particles?
The relationship of temperature to rate of scattering and kinetic energy of
the particles is directly proportional, When the temperature increased, the
particles will collide frequently because the particles move around faster.

CONCLUSION

My conclusion in this activity is that heat transfer is applied when a hotter

object (higher temperature) is mixed or in contact with a cooler object (lower
temperature) vice versa. There is also change in temperature when heat
transfer is applied between two objects. The relationship between
temperature to rate of scattering and kinetic energy is directly proportional.
When the temperature is increased, the average velocity of the particles is
increased. The average kinetic energy of these particles is also increased.
