What I Need
v to Know

A number of physical quantities cannot be represented by a first-degree

equation, function or inequality. There are real-world situations that are best modeled
by functions of degree greater than 1.
In different field of studies like science, technology, and specially engineering
problems that require nonlinear solutions are usually encountered. In such case, a
quadratic equation plays a very important role, even in solving real-life problems.
Quadratic equations are often used in two-dimensional problems and in
relationships between two physical variables. Here, relationships are observed,
patterns are noted, and generalizations are drawn.

Learning Objectives

This module aims to achieve the following:

 define a quadratic equation

 differentiate quadratic from other forms of equations
 illustrate a quadratic equation

different classifications of equations. These learnings will be essential in the topic
that we will be discussing. Let’s check whether you can still remember what has
been taught to you or no more. Answer the following questions correctly.

2
2. 2x = 9 7. 21 – 4m2 = 3m
3. 5x3 + 3x2 – 4x = 7 8. 2x(x – 2) = 20

What’s New?

A second degree equation is called quadratic equation. The general form of

quadratic equation is ax2 + bx + c = 0. In this equation, x represents a variable,
where as a, b, and c are constants where a is not equal to zero. If the value of a is
zero, then the equation is linear. Hence, ax 2 is the quadratic term, bx is the linear
term while c is the constant term.
Linda was given flashcards with different equations on it. From the flashcards,
she was able to construct a table about the equations.

equation classification
3x + 5= 0 Linear equation
2x2 + 4x – 5 = 0 Quadratic equation
x2 + 4x = 8 Quadratic equation
2x3 – 6x = 8 Polynomial equation
5x2 + 2x - 1 = 0 Quadratic equation

Guide Questions:

1. From Linda’s table, what is the difference between a linear and a quadratic
equation?
2. In a quadratic equation, ax2 + bx + c = 0, why can a not be equal to zero?
3. What common characteristics do the quadratic equations have?

Example 1: Express the equation (2x + 1)2 = 5x in standard form.

4x2 + 4x + 1 = 5x Squaring the binomial

4x2 + 4x + 1 – 5x = 5x – 5x Addition Property
4x2 – x + 1 = 0

Example 2: Identify a, b, and c in the equation

2(3x – 2)(3x + 2) = (4x – 1)2

2( 9x2 – 4) = (4x – 1)2 Multiplying sum and difference

2(9x2 – 4) = 16x2 – 8x + 1 Squaring the binomial
18x2 – 8 = 16x2 – 8x + 1 Distributive Property
18x2 – 16x2 + 8x – 8 – 1 = 0 Addition Property
2x2 + 8x – 9 = 0 Combining similar terms

Therefore, a = 2, b = 8 and c = -9

Example 3:Write 4x( x – 6) = 4 in standard form then identify the values of a, b, and c
4x2 – 24x = 4 Distributive Property
2
4x – 24x – 4 = 0 Addition Property
Therefore, a = 4, b = -24 and c = -4

What I Have Learned

1. How are quadratic equations different from other classifications of equation?

A linear equation in two variables doesn't involve any power higher than one
for either variable. It has the general form Ax + By + C = 0, where A, B and C are
constants. ... A quadratic equation, on the other hand, involves one of the variables
raised to the second power. It has the general form y = ax2 + bx + c.

2. How do you write quadratic equations in standard form? Give at least 3 examples.
Standard form= ax2+bx+c=0

Examples:
1. 8x +4x2=-7
4x2 + 8x – (-7)=0
4x2+8x+7=0
2. 3x(x-4)=15
3x²-12x-15=0

3. –x2+5x=0

3. Do you agree that 5 – 2x = 2x2 can be written in two different ways? Justify your
answer.

I agree, 1.) 5 - 3x = 2x², 2.) 0 = 2x² + 3x - 5

What I Can Do

In this activity, you will be extending your learning in solving real-life problems. Use
all kinds of resources you have to answer the activity.

 Name some objects or cite situations in real life where quadratic equations
are illustrated. Formulate quadratic equations out of these objects or
situations then describe each.

ONE AND TWO. A company is going to make frames as part of a new product they
are launching. The frame will be cut out of a piece of steel, and to keep the weight
down, the final area should be 28 cm^2.The inside of the frame has to be 11 cm by 6
cm.
Area of steel before cutting:
= (11 + 2x) × (6 + 2x) cm^2
= 66 + 22x + 12x + 4x^2
Quadratic Equation = 4x^2 + 34x + 66

Area of steel after cutting out the 11 × 6 middle:

= 4x^2 + 34x + 66 - 66
Quadratic Equation = 4x^2 + 34x

THREE. A ball is thrown straight up, from 3 m above the ground, with a velocity of 14
m/s.
Add them up and the height h at any time t is:
h = 3 + 14t - 5t^2
Quadratic Equation : -5t^2 + 14t + 3 = 0
