Performance Task # 1Direction: Following the important information about arts, create a

painting that uses coffee as a medium. Use Oslo paper as canvass. See the given
samples.

1. Process Questions:
a. What is your chosen subject of art? Explain the reason for selecting the
subject of your coffee painting.

The subject of my coffee painting is the calendar year 2020, hence the
name of the painting: “2020”. I wanted to create a physical representation of
this year. I wanted to know how I see 2020 as a scenery and so I created this
coffee painting while thinking about how the year felt for me personally. As I
was painting “2020”, I imagined trees without branches, soils which are
parched, and the ambience covered with a blanket of darkness. In short, I saw
2020 as an endless night in a desolate land. It was supposed to end that way
but I felt that something was missing; I do not feel that this was all that I see in
this specific calendar year. After several minutes of pondering, I created a
moon. Even though I do not see the real source of the light or hope, which is
the sun, it is enough for me to know that there is hope somewhere out there
during this difficult time. I figured that I still wanted to see light in the darkness
– I want to believe that there is a brighter place ahead this dark and gloomy
present. As the author of Les Misérables, Victor Hugo, quotes, “Even the
darkest night will end and the sun will rise.”
b. How would you classify your art work?

I classify my artwork as a form of visual art because it is something that I

can see and it was created in a two-dimensional space and stay right there.

c. How will you define art based from your work?

Art, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder; however, I do believe that
anything has the capacity to be art. If our definition of art becomes more
flexible, we can consider anything around us as art. I do think that anything can
have its value judged as an art form.

In its most basic definition, art should be something that can be helpful
to anyone – and if possible, to everyone. Art may become helpful in our
cravings for aesthetically pleasing objects. Art may help us appease our
rebellious tendencies or instigate it. It may help us cook the food we need and
want. Art should be something that can help us in any way, shape or form.

d. Would you consider it as an artwork? Why?

Yes, I do consider my work as an art.

As I stated in the previous question, art should be something that can

help us in any way, shape, or form. I think this artwork helps people in an
emotional and psychological way. People may see or feel despair as they
glance at my coffee painting, but they will realize after they ponder for a
minute that there is hope in it.

e. Aside from coffee, what other media can be used in creating your
artwork?

My artwork can be made using a variety of media. Using digital software

or apps can make the process of my artwork easier. I can also use conventional
artistic tools as a medium such as but not limited to oil pastels, color pencils,
water colors, and paints.

f. Is this particular artwork present in your community? In your perspective,

why is this medium widely used or not widely used in your community?

Coffee painting is not present in my community before I did it.

I believe there are a few key reasons why coffee is not widely used as a
medium in our community.

1. Artists in my community are few in numbers due to the small area of our
barangay.
2. Coffee is used primarily for brewing a great drink so people in my
community do not want to use it as a medium for painting.
3. Coffee smells and it is very sticky. Coffee does not smell bad but it feels off
when painting.
4. There are more convenient alternatives that does not carry the
disadvantages coffee has.
