NUTRITION AND DIET THERAPY (LABORATORY)

Activity 1

1. Prepare a description of the processes of digestion and absorption that can be

presented to a fourth-grade class.

We chew our food, and our teeth break down the food into smaller pieces. Also, the
liquid in our mouths (saliva) causes a chemical reaction that starts to digest the food. In
our stomach, chemicals called enzymes change the food into smaller molecules that the
body can use. After the food is changed into small molecules, the blood carries the
molecules to other parts of the body.

2. Of what value are enzymes to digestion? Name five enzymes and the nutrients on which
they act.

Amylase - It helps break down large starch molecules into smaller sugar molecules.
Pepsin - helps break down proteins into amino acids.
Trypsin - breaks down proteins.
Pancreatic lipase - breaks apart fats.
Deoxyribonuclease and ribonuclease - breaks bonds in nucleic acids like DNA and RNA.

3. Explain why the body needs energy/fuel even during sleep.

Every living being is in a constant need of energy irrespective of whether it is working,

sleeping or doing nothing. Only the amount of energy varies according to the activity it is
doing. During sleep our bodies does the important job of repair work and cell
development, which requires energy. That is why it is suggested not to go to
sleep on an empty stomach so that our bodies have a constant source of energy to
perform its functions.

4. Compute your own Desirable Body Weight using both Alternative Method and
Tannhauser Method. Show your conversions and computations. All answers should be
rounded off to whole numbers.
Alternative Method:

Height = 5 ft. 11 in
Allow 105 lbs. for the first 5 ft.
Each addition inch, multiply by 5 so, 11 x 5 = 55 lbs.
105 lbs. + 55 lbs. = 160 lbs.
For large body frame, add another 10 lbs. so, 160 lbs. +10 lbs. = 170 lbs.
Tannhauser Method:

Convert ft. to in. so, 5 ft x 12 = 60 inches

60 + 11 in. = 71 inches
Convert in. to cm so, 71 in x 2.54 = 180.34 = 180
180 – 10% = 162 kg.
162 – 100 = 62 kg.
62 x 2.2 = 136 lbs.

5. Discuss:

a. Your usual activities like if you have a sedentary or active lifestyle.

My usual activities are biking, jogging, play computer games, watch
television, doing household chores

b. What is your usual food eaten during breakfast, lunch, dinner (include
snacks, if there’s any)?
My usual food eaten are those food which always comes good with rice,
like sinigang, chicken, adobo, kare-kare. But I don’t eat breakfasts ever
since I stepped on my Junior High School because those were the times
that I always woke up late and had those habit that is waking up always
30 minutes before the class until now.

c. Calculate your Total Energy Requirement.

Weight (in lbs.) = 240
240 / 2.2 = 109 kgs.
109 * 24 = 2616
2616 * 1.0 = 2616
