Restaurant in Pandemic Situations

Human resource management plays an important role in the overall performance of an

organization. It creates an environment that deals with people which affects customers and

employees. People working in Hospitality industries such as: restaurants, hotels and tourism are

confronted by many challenges during the outbreak of COVID19 pandemic. These industries

were asked to limit their staff and other human resource. They were advised to adhere to social

distancing, restrict traveling and prefer staying at home. These measures were imposed as

mandatory during the smart lockdown. Due to the temporary closure of restaurants, the overall

business was set on decline trajectory, thus the economy in the world was severely affected.

People were rendered jobless and the economy of hotels and restaurant were tremendously

affected because their business depended on people (Gursoy, & Chi, 2020).

To cope with these situations, many organizations and hospitality industries initiated new

practices and policies to run their business and overcome unemployment in such challenging

situations. Remote working instead of reducing staff calls it to work from and gave training their

employees how to run a business even staying home was one of the best practice because the use

of technology became very common to reduce the time in travelling. restaurants gave pieces of

training to their employees to deliver the product to homes instead of visiting the workplace.

Another best practice was giving staff to healthcare insurances self-care and flexibility were

ensured because at the same time work from home the employees are also with their family

members and children (Shahi, K., & Neloy, 2020). E.g Alan’s company has offered free

education to the employee.

manage its employees and formulating incentives. This was a major challenge during the

pandemic to ensure human resource, particularly in the hospitality industries. However, we

observed that many restaurants and hotel management introduced SOPs.
