Module 4: Teaching of Fiction

Activity1. You have already read or know a lot of fictional stories since your childhood days.
These stories are told either through written novels or short stories, narrated to you orally, film, or
through a television series. From all those stories that you knew, what certain patterns do they
follow? What are their similarities? In this activity, your task is to identify the elements or
components that make up a fiction or story. Give at least five components that you know.
1. Character
2. Plot
3. Setting
4. Point of view
5. Theme

Assessment Task.
1. Look for any fiction literature (short story, novel, folktale, myths or legend) and then create an
activity that will assess the students’ knowledge of the elements of story.
Note. You may use one or two or more elements of fiction.

Instructions: In this lesson, you are given the task to read and analyze the folk tale about the Beauty

and The Beast written by Joseph Jacobs. After that, you are going to answer a series questions

about the elements of story. The given questions are the following:

1. Characters
 Who are the character/s of the story?
 What are you learning about the way each character feels about each other.
2. Setting
 Where does the story take place?
 If the story were in another time, would it change? How?
 3. Plot
 What is the main problem of the story? How did/do you think would/will be solved?
4. Theme
 What is the story about?
5. Point of view
 Whose point of view is the story told by?
6. Style
 What are some interesting words, phrases, and sentences of the story?

REFLECTION: Write your insights about your learning experiences you had in this lesson.

After learning and experience this lesson and activities. I learned a lot about how literature
is really important in our lives as well as a students and the elements of fiction that found in the
story. I realized that learning literature will help the learners to expose and express their opinion,
ideas and experience into the reality of the world. Also, in the teaching and assessment of different
types of literary text and other forms of fiction will enhance the students to develop their literary
competence and critical thinking. And, learning the elements of fiction will help us to identify and
analyze a literary text. I learned also that the elements of story that found in literary text will help
us to get better understanding of the cultural values, language style, as well as the personal
enrichment embedded in it.
