PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

FORMING PRESENT CONTINUOUS:

I AM EATING

YOU ARE EATING

HE IS EATING
SHE IS EATING
IT IS EATING

WE ARE EATING

YOU (ALL) ARE EATING

THEY ARE EATING

FORMING PRESENT CONTINUOUS QUESTIONS:

AM I DRINKING ?

ARE YOU DRINKING ?

IS HE DRINKING ?
IS SHE DRINKING ?
IS IT DRINKING ?

ARE WE DRINKING ?

ARE YOU (ALL) DRINKING ?

ARE THEY DRINKING ?

EXAMPLE QUESTIONS:

Are the children swimming right now?

Is Martin doing his homework at the moment?
What are you doing?
We use PRESENT CONTINUOUS:

1. to describe an actions that are happening at the moment of speaking

(описать действия, которые происходят в момент разговора).

What are they doing right now?

Tina is playing the piano.

Larry and Joseph are exercising.

Olya, Olga, and Olivia are writing a book.

Is it raining?

2. to talk about temporary situations, even if the action isn’t happening at this moment
(говорить о временных ситуациях, даже если действия не происходят в данный
момент).

John's working in a bar until he finds a job in his field. (He might not be working now.)

I'm reading a really great book.

She's staying with her friend for a week.

3. to talk about temporary or new habits (for normal habits that continue for a long time, we
use the present simple). We often use this with expressions like 'these days' or 'at the
moment'
[говорить о временных или новых привычках (для нормальных привычек, которые
продолжаются в течение длительного времени, мы используем настоящее
простое). Мы часто используем это с такими выражениями, как «сегодня» или
«на данный момент»].

He's eating a lot these days.

She's swimming every morning (she didn't use to do this).

You're smoking too much.

4. Another present continuous use is for habits that are not regular, but that happen very
often. In this case we usually use an adverb like 'always', 'forever' or 'constantly'. Often,
we use the present continuous in this way to talk about an annoying habit.
(Другое настоящее постоянное использование для привычек, которые не
являются регулярными, но это происходит очень часто. В этом случае мы обычно
используем наречие «всегда», «навсегда» или «постоянно». Часто мы используем
нынешнюю непрерывность таким образом, чтобы говорить о раздражающей
привычке).

You're forever losing your keys!

She's constantly missing the train.

Lucy's always smiling!

5. To talk about definite future arrangements (with a future time word). In this case we
have already made a plan and we are pretty sure that the event will happen in the future.
[Разговор об определенных будущих договоренностях (с будущим словом
времени). В этом случае мы уже составили план и уверены, что это событие
произойдет в будущем].

I'm meeting my father tomorrow.

We're going to the beach at the weekend.

I'm leaving at three.
