DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The duties involve receiving and transferring telephone calls,
acting as a receptionist and occasionally performing routine clerical work. The work is performed in accordance
with a prescribed routine. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:


Transfers telephone calls to appropriate parties and makes station connections;
Gives out routine information to the public;
Receives and sends telegrams and faxes;
Reports telephone lines which are out of order;

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This work involves responsibility for the performance of standardized
clerical tasks and the full-time or substantial part-time operation of a computer for the entry and retrieval of information
using software to produce printed material such as letters, memoranda and forms. Specific duties vary with the needs of
the department. Procedures are usually fixed, but detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments. Work is

SENIOR STENOGRAPHER 4.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is moderately difficult clerical, stenographic and typing
work requiring understanding of specific law, office rules, procedures and policies. It entail the full-time or
substantial part-time taking and transcribing of dictation and operation of a typewriter. It calls for the exercise
of independent judgment in the application of prescribed procedures and methods to routine cases. Unusual
problems or situations, not previously encountered, are referred to supervisors before action is taken. For the
most part work is performed under general supervision. Supervision may be exercised over the work of one or
more clerical assistants. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:


Acts as secretary to an official in cases where assignments call for the use of judgment and experience in

SECRETARY I 5.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for independently performing complex clerical
operations and administrative support tasks for a unit in a Division. Incumbents spend a substantial amount of time operating a
personal computer and the rest of the time on routine administrative tasks to ensure the efficient workflow of the office. The work
also involves responsibility for the entry and retrieval of information using software on a computer and using a computer to
produce printed material such as letters, memoranda and forms. Incumbents work under general supervision receiving detailed
instructions only where policies have not been determined. This class differs from that of Secretary II by the increased time
spent on operating software and the more limited scope of duties and decision-making responsibilities. Does related work as
required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:


Prepares correspondence, documents, records and other written material in final or draft form using computer software from

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:


The work involves responsibility for the independent performance of moderately difficult financial accounts and records. The work
may require decision-making as to methods to be used and classification of records and accounts. The incumbent will be
responsible for entering and retrieving information from a computer database/spreadsheet using software. The work is performed under
general supervision and the incumbent may train lower level clerical workers. Supervision is not a responsibility of this class.
This position differs from Account Clerk in that duties are more complex and represent a higher level of responsibility and
independent judgment in the performance of work assignments. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:


Reviews a variety of complex financial documents, classifies them and distributes items into a variety of accounts
according to prescribed procedures and policies;
Posts figures to appropriate accounts, makes all necessary adjustments in balances and verif ies and
reconciles balances; renews status of accounts as adjustments are made and takes appropriate action as
authorizing payment, issuing checks or preparing bills;
Tracks audits and monitors a variety of accounts;
Verifies adjustments are made to correct allocations and issues reports as required;
Prepares complex financial or statistical summary reports;
Checks for accuracy of computations and completeness or supervises the preparation of daily, weekly and
monthly reports which are compiled into summary reports or claims for state or federal reimbursement;

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for operating and/or
controlling a mainframe or network of personal computers and peripheral equipment for Albany County. The
incumbent analyzes operating instructions and carries out the proper operational procedures and requirements
necessary to process Albany County departmental needs. This position does not involve responsibilities in the
area of programming or system analysis. The work is performed under the general supervision of a
Supervising Network and Systems Technician with some latitude allowed for scheduling and performing the
work. The incumbent exercises no supervision. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:


Operates a personal computer, network of computers or mainframe and peripherals to print or generate a variety of
documents;
Studies program operating instructions, enters pre-determined settings on personal computers and
peripherals and loads equipment with disks, CD-ROMs, cartridges, tapes and paper as necessary to
complete particular tasks;

CLERK I 8.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Performs a variety of routine clerical procedures.


Employees in this class are usually trained to do specific duties in an assigned area. The work is performed
under direct supervision during training. Employees receive detailed instructions and close supervision at the
beginning of their employment and subsequent to new assignments. The Clerk I position may be an entry-level
position for advancement to higher level and specialized functional responsibilities within an operating agency.
Does related work as required.

Sort, indexes files documents such as vendors bills, cases histories, birth and death records, invoices
alphabetically, numerically, chronologically and by other predetermined categories;

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:


These duties involve responsibility for performing more difficult and responsible payroll assignments.
Incumbent in this position performs a variety of clerical functions that require the use of independent judgment
in the application and explanation of specific rules, procedures and policies regarding payroll calculations and
deductions. Work assignments generally develop from the receipt of papers, payroll time sheets, claims or
other materials presented to the unit that requires knowledge regarding the procedures involved in the payroll
preparation. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level official, however, unusual or
more difficult problems are referred to a higher official. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:


Maintains time records, card files, schedules, and payroll data;
Gives routine information regarding departmental procedures orally or in response to telephone inquiries;
Assists employees with problems concerning payroll, bereavements, work compensation time, jury duty,

activities. This is routine manual work requiring some knowledge of grounds maintenance activities.
