INFERENCE

● The process by which a conclusion is inferred from multiple observations. The

conclusion may be correct or incorrect. Conclusion inferred from multiple
observation may be tested by additional observations.
● The act of passing from proposition, statement, or judgment considered as true to
another whose truth is believed to follow from that of the former.
● The act or process of reading a conclusion about something from known facts or
evidence.
● The term “inference” refers to the process of using observations and background
knowledge as well as other known premises to determine a conclusion that makes
sense.

Examples:-

Ali arrives at home at 4:30 and knows that her mother does not get off of work until 5. Ali
also sees that the lights are off in their house.

Ali infers that her mother is not yet home.

A woman walks into a store soaking wet and it is raining.

It can be inferred that she does not have umbrella.

READING BETWEEN THE LINES

● To understand or find an implicit meaning in addition to the obvious one.
● To perceive or deduce a meaning that is hidden or implied rather than being openly stated.
● To discover a hidden meaning or purpose in something written, said, or done.

Examples:-

I’m always honest. If you do not want the truth, don’t ask me.

I’ll say anything I want and if it hurts your feelings, you are one with the problems.

You do not make enough money.

You do not spend enough time at work.

READING BEYOND THE LINES

Thinking about things that are not written or even implied. It might be the background of the writer, the
events happening in the era he is writing in or the major literary influences that makes or enables him to
write as he does.
