Technical background
Component-related deviation in micro switch of selector lever.

The described repair only applies to selector levers of manufacturer ZF.

If a selector lever of manufacturer ECS/Küster (see illustration 2) is fitted, this TPI does not apply. In this
case the selector lever must be repaired according to ⇒ TPI 2058823/*. In this case the costs for the repair
cannot be accounted on this TPI.

Production change

Measure
1. Check manufacturer of selector lever
2. Fit micro switch module (if necessary)

3. Perform basic setting of micro switch module

4. Check function of selector lever

1.

Check manufacturer of selector lever:

• Unclip the selector lever cover according to the ⇒ repair manual and pull up the gear lever boot. It is not
necessary to remove the handle (illustration 3, red ellipse).
• Check whether a selector lever of manufacturer ZF is fitted:

‒ ZF selector levers have a yellow emergency release on the right side of the selector lever housing
(illustration 1, red ellipse).
‒ ECS/Küster selector levers (illustration 2) can be repaired according to ⇒ TPI 2058823/*.

accounted on this TPI.

2.

Fit micro switch module on vehicles with multi-piece centre console;

• Remove the storage compartment of the front centre console according to the repair manual.
• Remove the left upper centre console according to the repair manual.
• Clip switch module 1 of the centre console out of the holder and raise it (illustration 3, yellow arrow). A
complete removal of switch module 1 is not necessary.
• Use a metal drill bit on the left side (in driving direction, illustration 3, white arrow) to drill a hole in the centre
console.

Swarf from the drilling must not get into the selector mechanism.

• Remove the bolt (illustration 4, red arrow) through the hole out of the selector housing.

Illustration 4) selector housing

Fit micro switch module on vehicles with one-piece multi-piece centre console;

• Remove the storage compartment of the front centre console according to the ⇒ repair manual.
• Remove the centre console trim panel according to ⇒ repair manual and slide it over the gear lever boot (see
illustration 5). It is not necessary to disconnect the electrical connector on the centre console trim panel.
• On the left side of the damping for the selector lever (see illustration 6, red ellipse) an approx. 10 mm deep
notch must be cut (detail, see illustration 7, highlighted in yellow).

Swarf from the cutting must not get into the selector mechanism.

• Remove the bolt (illustration 6, red arrow) out of the selector housing.

For all vehicles:

• Unplug the electric connector of the selector mechanism for the wiring harness (illustration 4, red ellipse).
• Pull a protective hose (of part number 5Q0 713 128 A) over the unplugged connector and the wiring
harness.
• Move the selector lever from position P to D.
• Carefully remove the sticker (part number) of the selector housing (illustration 8, red ellipse).
• Attach the sticker (part number) around the electrical cable (illustration 9, red arrow).

(of part number 5Q0 713 128 A, illustration 11, red arrow).
• Carefully insert the measuring appliance set -V.A.G 1594/ 12- of the measuring appliance set -V.A.G 1594
D- into the coding pockets (illustration 10, arrows) on the flat contact housing of the micro switch module
(push measuring cables to the stop).

‒ Red measuring cable => chamber of red/yellow cable

‒ Black measuring cable => chamber of brown cable

To avoid damaging the contacts or the insulation, the measuring cables must only be inserted into the
marked coding pockets.

Illustration 11) example: bolt in micro switch

• Place the micro switch module with the previously fitted bolt on the selector housing. Tighten the bolt
(illustration 12, red arrow) through the bore hole/notch (illustration 3 and 7, tightening torque: 2 Nm +/-0.2
Nm).

• Secure the micro switch module with 2 U-shaped clips (of part number 5Q0 713 128 A) on the selector
housing (illustration 12, yellow arrows).

Illustration 12) micro switch module on selector lever

• Connect the wiring harness with the connector housing of the driver circuit (illustration 13, blue arrow).

Illustration 13) connectors

• Connect the measuring cable of the measuring appliance set -VAG 1594 D- with a voltage tester (for
example: -VAS 6762/45-, illustration 14). If necessary use a suitable adapter of the measuring appliance -
V.A.G 1594 D-.
• Select gear P.

After connecting the measuring cables with the voltage tester the LED on the voltage tester lights up.

Illustration 14) example: voltage tester

3.
Basic setting of micro switch module:

• Select gear P.
• Slowly push the upper micro switch in driving direction by pressing on the slanted section (illustration 15,
yellow arrows) and hold in this position:

‒ The LED on the voltage tester must go out.

Illustration 15) micro switch module

• Allow the spring force to slowly push the upper micro switch completely against the selector lever (towards
the back of the vehicle).

‒ Tighten the adjuster screw (illustration 15, black arrow) with a torque of 2 Nm +/- 0.2 Nm.
‒ The LED on the voltage tester must be on.

To select the positions + or - in the Tiptronic gate, a force of about 20 N is needed.

Readjustment (if necessary):

• Loosen adjuster screw (illustration 15, black arrow).

• Slowly push the upper micro switch in driving direction by pressing on the slanted section (illustration 15,
yellow arrows) and hold in this position:

‒ The LED on the voltage tester must go out.

• Slightly press the selector lever towards the back of the vehicle (take out free play) and hold in this position.
• Allow the spring force to slowly push the upper micro switch completely against the selector lever (towards
the back of the vehicle).

• Repeat check described in point 4.

Make sure that the inner spring does not get pressed too much.

• After a successful check the remaining 2 U-shaped clips (of part number 5Q0 713 128 A, illustration 16,
yellow arrows) have to be secured on the micro switch housing to protect against dislocation.

Illustration 16) U-shaped clips protect against dislocation

• Repeat check described in point 4.

• After a successful check carefully pull out the measuring cables from the flat contact housing (coding
pockets) of the micro switch module.
• Remove the protective film from the Velcro on the housing of the driver circuit (illustration 11, green arrow).
• Align/position the housing of the driver circuit (illustration 17) and press it firmly on the selector housing.

Illustration 17) positioning of driver circuit housing on selector housing

• Insert the electric connector into the selector mechanism (illustration 4, red ellipse).

If necessary: Fasten the wiring harness with a cable tie to protect against chafing/rattling.

• If the selector lever now works, the event entry in the steering column control unit (diagnosis address 0016)
must be deleted.
• If the selector lever does not work, repeat the readjustment.
• The assembly of the vehicle takes place in reverse order according to the repair manual.
