EEC461 LAB 2
AIM:
The aim of this lab experiment is to study the fault simulation and step by step fault finding procedures
of RF section.
INTRODUCTION:
The signal from the antenna or the cable is connected to the tuner, which consists of an RF amplifier,
mixer, and local oscillator. The tuner is used to select the TV channel to be viewed and to convert the
picture and sound carriers plus their modulation to an intermediate frequency (IF). As in most super
heterodyne receivers, the local-oscillator frequency is set higher than the incoming signal by the IF
value. Most TV set tuners are prepackaged in sealed and shielded enclosures. They are two tuners in
one, one for the VHF signals and another for the UHF signals. The VHF tuner usually uses low-noise FETs
for the RF amplifier and the mixer. UHF tuners use a diode mixer with no RF amplifier or a GaAs FET RF
amplifier and mixer. Today most modern tuners are a single integrated circuit.
Fault insertion: the shorting shunt from pin 2&3 was removed and placed between 1&2 of jumpers j1
Symptoms: even with the antenna connected there is no picture but only sound present with low
contrast.
Procedure
1. The power supply at tp14 of the tuner section was checked and measured +12v
2. Then we checked the +12v supply at TP13 if it was ok
3. Then we removed the shorting shunt from pin 1&2 and placed it between pin 2&3 of jumpers j1
Fault insertion: the shorting shunt from pin 2&3 was removed and placed between pin 1&2 of jumper 3

Fault insertion: the shorting shunt from pin 2&3 was removed and placed between 1&2 of jumpers j5
Symptoms: no picture, no transmitting sound, only snow. But signal received from antenna in VH band is
of good quality.
