Heat Exchangers Selection, Design and Construction, by E.A.D. Saunders,

Longman Scientific and Technical, Essex, England, 1988, ISBN 0-470-
20870-8, pp. 568, price: US$ 99.95 (co-published in the United States with
John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York)

The overall impression of the reviewer is that this would make an excellent
reference text for anyone actively engaged in the design of single heat exchange
devices for chemical or petroleum process applications. As pointed out by the
author, heat exchanger network synthesis for a chemical or petroleum process
plant involving numerous hot and cold process streams was beyond the scope
of the book.
This text has been subdivided into four sections, several of which appear to
be capable of standing alone. Most of Part 1 Heat Exchanger Types is devoted
to the widely used unfired shell-and-tube heat exchanger and includes consid-
erable practical detail on typical heat exchangers including types of shell-and-
tube heat exchangers, tube layout or configuration, head types, tube design
features, and exchanger fabrication. The balance of Part 1 is devoted to the
practical aspects of air-cooled plate and double-pipe heat exchangers. A num-
ber of special types of heat exchangers are also discussed. This section contains
numerous detailed diagrams of the exchangers and of the exchanger compo-
nents that clarify the discussion of the design, specification, and construction
of heat exchangers. A brief summary of the primary considerations in exchan-
ger type selection is presented in an appendix.
The discussion and development of the heat transfer and fluid flow equa-
tions in Part 2 Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow is altogether too brief and ele-
mentary for use in an undergraduate or first level graduate heat transfer or
plant design course. Furthermore, the absence of problems in this section sig-
nificantly reduces the potential for use in a classroom environment. The struc-
ture of Part 2 assumes that the reader has a considerable background in heat
transfer and fluid mechanics, thus permitting him to assimilate the material
easily. The organized presentation of correlations for heat transfer coefficients
and pressure loss for a variety of tube configurations was found to be quite
useful. The book would make an excellent reference text for an advanced
chemical or petroleum plant design course in which the heat exchanger equip-
ment needed to be specified as part of the design process. The chapter on foul-
ing, while not extensive, would be a useful supplement or background for heat
transfer and/or plant design courses at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels.
In Part 3 Thermal Design the author presents a thermal design procedure
and then proceeds to apply the procedure to the design/specification of shell-

and-tube, air-cooled, gasketed plate and double pipe heat exchangers. This
section contains considerable design data in tabular and correlation form with
applications to design problems. The thermal design procedure is applied in
detail to the design of twelve single heat exchange process units for various
heat exchanger types and processes in Chapter 17.
The final segment of the book Part 4 Materials and Cost reviews corrosion
phenomena qualitatively and briefly discusses materials of construction and
the utilization of the various materials in specific applications. The last chap-
ter summarizes the sizing and cost-estimation techniques for the various heat
exchanger types. The cost-estimation examples would have been more useful,
had the publisher chosen to present the costs in US$ for the American edition
rather than in Pounds Sterling (£).
