Annual
Friends of
CLARE
Tribute Dinner
Saving lives through recovery
The CLARE Foundation is a nonprofit
organization providing compassionate
treatment and recovery services for
alcoholism and substance abuse
to individuals, families, and the
community.

Local efforts by concerned community

members began in the late 1960s in response
to the lack of recovery services for alcoholics
and addicts gathering on the beaches of Santa
Monica and Venice. In 1970, the founding
group rented a small storefront and sleeping
area on Pico Boulevard and began providing
education, resources, and a safe place for
detoxification.

Each year over 26,000 people turn to CLARE

for help, and over 2,600 are admitted to one
of CLARE’s 11 comprehensive programs. Our
continuum of care includes long- and short-
term strategies that focus on healing the
whole person through professional counseling
and compassionate support by our trained and
certified staff.

F R I E N D S O F C L A R E T R I B U T E AWA R D

S tephen Moyer’s passion for acting began in local theatre in

Brentwood & Chelmsford, Essex, England where he also made
a name for himself with his own theatre company “The Reject
Society.” He then trained at the London Academy of Music
and Dramatic Arts and began his professional acting career on
stage, including two years with the Royal Shakespeare Company
(“Romeo & Juliet,” “The Thebans,” “Columbus”), touring in “Romeo
& Juliet” with the Oxford Stage in the title role of Romeo, and in
the world premiere of Pete Townshend’s rock opera “The Iron Man”
at The Young Vic. British television credits include leading roles
in Channel 4 dramas “Men Only” (2001) (TV), “NY-LON” (2004),
“Five’s Menace” (2002) (TV) and the BBC’s “The Grand” (1997),
“Lilies” (2007) and “Empathy” (2007) (TV), as well as a number of
guest roles in popular shows such as “Cold Feet” (1997), “Midsomer
Murders” (1997) and “Waking the Dead” (2000).

In the meantime, he made his screen debut starring in the

eponymous role in “Prince Valiant” (1997) with Katherine Heigl,
followed by “Quills” (2000) with Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet,
Joaquin Phoenix & Michael Caine, as well as leading roles in
subsequent movies, including “Entrusted” (2003) (TV) and
“Restraint” (2008). U.S. television credits include leading roles in
“Princess of Thieves” (2001) (TV) with Keira Knightley, NBC’s mini-
series “Uprising” (2001) (TV) with David Schwimmer, Hank Azaria
and Donald Sutherland, USA Network’s Golden Globe and Emmy
-nominated “The Starter Wife” (2007) starring Debra Messing,
and, most recently co-starring with Anna Paquin in Alan Ball’s
Golden Globe-nominated show for HBO “True Blood” (2008) as the
173-year-old vampire Bill Compton. He has recently completed
filming “Ice” (2010) with Sam Neill & Clair Forlani, “The Caller”
(2010) directed by Matthew Parkhill, and “The Double” (2011) with
Richard Gere, Martin Sheen & Topher Grace.

Moyer will next be seen on screen in “Priest,” alongside Paul

Bettany and Cam Gigandet & will soon begin filming “Big Valley”
with Jessica Lang & Aidan Quinn. Moyer divides his time between

J eff McFarland has been a practicing California lawyer
for 20 years, and is a partner in the Los Angeles office of
Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP. He is a familiar
face in the recovery community, having been involved with
and a supporter of a number of drug and alcohol recovery
programs “for fun and for free” for over 25 years. He heads
The Timmins Foundation, a non-profit entity founded in
memory of former CLARE board member Bob Timmins,
whose mission is to help persons who cannot afford to get
treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.

In addition to his law practice and work within the recovery

community, in his free(?) time Jeff trains for and competes
in full and half Ironman triathlons, having competed in
and finished Ironman Canada, Ironman China as well as
the 2006 and 2009 Ford Ironman World Championships
in Kona, Hawaii. Jeff and his wife of 23 years, Melanie,
live in Manhattan Beach and are the parents of two
boys—Spencer 18 and Ethan 12. In addition to CLARE, the
McFarlands are supporters of The Timmins Foundation,
MusiCares, The Tony Hawk Foundation, The Promises
Foundation, and Exceeding Expectations.
Sarge
EVENT HOST

S ARGE is an extraordinary triple-threat entertainer, who has

performed worldwide to adoring audiences. His sidesplitting comedy,
touching vocals and stunning display of dexterity as a pianist have
wowed crowds for decades. But SARGE’s road to success has not been
smoothly paved.
He was born in Miami Beach, Florida during the Civil Rights Movement to
a Jewish mother and black father, but given up for adoption soon after
birth. Fortunately, he was quickly adopted by a couple who then raised
him in Great Neck, Long Island. Although SARGE attended the best prep
schools in the region, all the while, he lived with some sense of confusion
because his adopted parents had raised him in a Jewish household
without much exposure to his black heritage. This led to some internal
conflict as a child and a teen—feelings he tried to numb with alcohol, drugs
and gambling.
He spent part of his young adult life as a homeless man, severely addicted to
several vices, and copping drugs at his hangout under the Manhattan Bridge
in New York City. With a wealth of talent unrealized, on December 26, 1990,
he had an epiphany that would change his life forever. As strange as it may
sound, on that day he made a decision to commit himself to sobriety—cold
turkey—and never looked back.
SARGE has been clean and sober since then, and he has dedicated himself to
assisting others who are facing the same battle.
His artistic talents surfaced on his 6th birthday after his parents took him to
see “The Sound of Music” on Broadway. When they returned home from the
show, and without any prompting, SARGE sat down at the family piano and
began to play songs from the show entirely “by ear”. He did this without ever
touching a piano before, and it was at this point that his parents knew they
had something special on their hands.
SARGE later attended Boston University’s School of Public Communication
where he graduated with a concentration in Advertising and Mass
Communication. After a short stint as a talent representative, the stage was
calling and SARGE enrolled at The Lee Strasberg Theater Institute. From
this point forward, he would no longer represent talent – rather, he would
“be” the talent. To make ends meet, SARGE wrote, produced and performed
for FOX’s wildly successful “Best Damn Sports Show Period”, as a nationally
syndicated radio host for FOX Sports Radio, and worked extensively for ABC
Wide World of Sports and CBS Sports.
But sometimes when one is at a crossroads, there has to be an “all-in”
proposition. So when “The NFL Today” host Greg Gumbel encouraged him to
“be a comedian, you’re too funny, too creative and too bright not to go for a
comedy career, “SARGE moved to his best buddy’s pull-out sofa in New York
to embark on a career in stand-up comedy. After playing clubs and colleges
all over America for three years, SARGE found himself opening for some of
the biggest names in music – Aretha Franklin, Paul Anka, The Beach Boys, and
Wayne Newton, just to name a few.
Working these high profile gigs helped SARGE learn to weave his own
musical talents into his comedy shows. Not only a stand-up comedian,
SARGE sings in his own voice and in a dozen others, including Harry Connick
Jr., Sammy Davis Jr., Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. Additionally, his dead-
on impressions of Marv Albert, Mike Tyson, Kermit the Frog and Gilbert
Gottfried leave audiences howling and clamoring for more.
Triple threats who don’t dance are hard to find in show business today. With
his mix of comedy, singing and piano playing, SARGE is a legitimate triple
threat and a rare find.

The CLARE solution:

Clarity for Youth

The Program

Through on-site school programming, the Clarity

for Youth Program allows CLARE to reach 2,600
youth each year with a powerful message to
prevent substance abuse. Clarity for Youth helps
young people gain a greater awareness of the
dangers of alcoholism and substance abuse by
sending CLARE counselors into local schools to
provide weekly, one-hour group sessions as well as
one-on-one sessions.

The Clarity for Youth Program continues to

expand for the 2010-2011 school year by
providing prevention classes at 27 schools
and seven community centers throughout
Los Angeles. To find out more, please call
Anna Baum, Director of Development,
