Learning Standard (ELA – 5th Grade)


• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.1
Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when
drawing inferences from the text.
Content Objective:
• SWBAT identify quotations that support the author’s main claims in the text
Language Objective:
• SWBAT explain in your own words the author’s main claims. (Function – Make a
statement)

Learning Standard (ELA – 5th Grade)


• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.4
Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a
text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area.
Content Objective:
• SWBAT clarify the meaning of three unfamiliar words using reference materials.
Language Objective:
• SWBAT define the unfamiliar words orally and in their personal student dictionary.

Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas,

Content Objective:
• SWBAT describe the relationship between trees and their leaves
Language Objective:
SWBAT retell the importance in trees discharging their leaves (Skills – Speaking)

Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and
teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas
and expressing their own clearly.
Content Objective:
• SWBAT share one unfamiliar word and its meaning during a small group discussion.
Language Objective:
SWBAT ask at least one question to peers during a whole class discussion. (Function –
Ask for further information)

• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.3
Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by
reasons and evidence.
Content Objective:
• SWBAT restate another students main idea and find a quote from the text to support it.
Language Objective:
• SWBAT record the main claims of peers in graphic organizer. (Discourse – Writing)

1. What language supports (scaffolds and strategies) will you provide for any of your
objectives to help your students access the language they need to learn within the
discipline. Why?
o I will provide students with an example on how to record an unfamiliar word into
our student dictionaries. This gives students the information they need to be
successful in making entries to their dictionaries.
o I will model how to restate someone else’s information in my own words. This
will show students how to restate information without saying exactly the same
thing.
