Albert Einstein´sBiography
Albert Einstein was a German mathematician and
physicistwhodevelopedthespecial and general theories of relativity. He
wasbornonMarch 14, 1879 in Ulm, Württemberg, Germany.

He grew up in a secular Jewishfamily. Hisfather, Hermann Einstein, was a

salesman and engineerwho, withhisbrother,
foundedElektrotechnischeFabrik J. Einstein & Cie, a Munich-
basedcompanythatmanufacturedelectricalequipment. Hismother, Pauline
Koch, ranthefamilyhousehold. Einstein hadonesister, Maja,
borntwoyearsafterhim.

Albert Einstein married Milena MariconJan. 6, 1903.

Whileattendingschool in Zurich, Einstein metMaric, a
Serbianphysicsstudent.

In 1921, Einstein won the Nobel PrizeforPhysicsforhisexplanation of

thephotoelectriceffect, sincehis ideas
onrelativitywerestillconsideredquestionable. He
wasn'tactuallygiventheawarduntilthefollowingyeardue to a
bureaucraticruling, and duringhisacceptancespeech he stillopted to
speakaboutrelativity.

In thedevelopment of his general theory, Einstein

hadheldontothebeliefthattheuniversewas a fixed, static entity, aka a
"cosmologicalconstant," thoughhislatertheoriesdirectlycontradictedthis
idea and assertedthattheuniversecould be in a state of flux.

As a physicist, Einstein hadmanydiscoveries, but he

isperhapsbestknownforhistheory of relativity and theequation E=MC2,
whichforeshadowedthedevelopment of atomicpower and theatomicbomb.
Albert Einstein died at theUniversity Medical Center at Princeton early in
themorningonApril 18, 1955 at theage of 76. Thepreviousday,
whileworkingon a speech to honor Israel'sseventhanniversary, Einstein
sufferedan abdominal aorticaneurysm. He wastaken to the hospital
fortreatmentbutrefusedsurgery, believingthat he hadlivedhislife and
wascontent to accepthisfate.

SinceEinstein’sdeath, a veritablemountain of
bookshavebeenwrittenontheiconicthinker'slife, including Einstein: HisLife
and Universe by Walter Isaacson and Einstein: A
Biography byJürgenNeffe, bothfrom 2007. Einstein'sownwords are
presented in thecollection TheWorld As I SeeIt.
