Yellow Cab Inc, operates the largest taxi company in British Columbia with over 350
taxicabs in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. As an international destination for busi-
ness and tourism, thousands of passengers ride in Yellow Cab taxis throughout the Van-
couver metropolitan area each day.
The Opportunity
Each year the number of WIFI enabled devices such as smartphones and tablets, grows
exponentially, as does the data requirement of these devices. Limits of data plans, roam-
ing fees and devices without cellular capabilities, cause people to rush to any source of
free WIFI to keep connected. Staying connected to business, social media, shopping and
other online services has transformed from being a trend, to being an essential require-
ment of today's world.
In a joint venture between Yellow Cab and Telus Mobility, an opportunity was realized
to provide free WIFI to passengers while allowing for better network connectivity and
resources for drivers to provide more efficient service. A rugged and reliable M2M de-
vice was required to provide Yellow Cab with an secure Ethernet connection for their in
cab dispatch displays and provide WIFI internet access to passengers.
The Solution

solutions that excel in demanding environments. The IPn4Gb+WIFI Cellular 4G/LTE
Ethernet/Serial Gateway w/WIFI was a perfect candidate to provide mobile WIFI ser-
vices for passengers and secure Ethernet connectivity for drivers.

The IPn4Gb+WIFI is equipped with both Ethernet and WIFI capabilities allowing the
segregation of the drivers dispatch display (Ethernet), and the passengers WIFI. This
allows the data for each application to be kept secure.

The configurable WIFI settings in the IPn4Gb allow the coverage area to be controlled
by adjusting the output power of the WIFI radio, and Access Point Isolation keeps
user’s connected to the WIFI secure from any other connected devices.

A custom/private network on the TELUS network was created for Yellow Cab for the
IPn4Gb+WIFI devices to connect. A third party Hot Spot technology powered by Col-
ony Networks, in partnership with TELUS, allows users to easily connect to the mobile
WIFI hotspot without the need for a password, just a simple click to agree to the terms
of use. The software provides for dynamic content filtering allowing Yellow Cab to
limit usage and throughput for users, preventing abusive data usage/consumption while
in Yellow Cab taxi’s.

Results

Microhard Systems was able to provide a rugged, reliable, innovative solution that met
or exceeded all requirements of the project. Responsive technical support and engineer-
ing assistance allowed TELUS & Yellow Cab to quickly and easy integrate the
IPn4Gb+WIFI to provide fast, secure and reliable network access to the fleet of taxi-
cabs.

Yellow Cab has successfully deployed the IPn4Gb+WIFI in over 320 cabs in the
Greater Vancouver area with continuing deployment for the entire fleet, and expansion
as the fleet/demand grows.
