Detailed Lesson Plan in English

Grade VI

1. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. State the rules of Subject – Verb Agreement;
b. Sustain interest in studying Subject – Verb Agreement; and
c. Compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical
structures.

III. Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill

Copy me
This is simply a game of copycat. The teacher uses a combination of
clapping and sounds to make a pattern. Students need to copy what the
teacher says/does. This can start with a simple pattern of only 2-3 and can
extend to add more. To make it even more challenging complete the pattern
quicker and see how many students are able to keep up and remember all the
parts. An example pattern could be: clap, slap, snap, click and yell.

2. Motivation
The teacher will show images through a powerpoint presentation that
depicts action and let the students come up with verbs that would
appropriately describe each image.

3. Unlocking of Difficulties (Inquiry Teaching)

The teacher will ask the students on what proper action word will be
appropriate to the sentence.

 Dahlia (sing, sings) in front of the crowd.

 The green vegetables (is, are) the (favorite, favorites) of Ken.
 Fish and chips (is, are) my favourite meal.

B. Development of the Lesson (Inductive Method)

1. Activity
The teacher will group the students into three. Then, the teacher
will assign each group a picture and each group will construct sentences
as much as they can based on what they saw in the picture.
 2. Analysis
The students will now share their answers in front of the class. A
representative of the group will discuss or point out the subject-verb on
each sentences.

3. Abstraction

What Are the Rules of Subject-Verb Agreement?

There are many rules in subject-verb agreement but we’ll only tacke 5 of
it.

Rules
1. Subjects and verbs must
agree in number. This is
the cornerstone rule that
forms the background of
the concept.
2. Subordinate clauses that
come between the subject
and verb don't affect their
agreement.
3. Prepositional phrases
between the subject and
verb usually do not affect
agreement.
4. When sentences start with
"there" or "here," the
subject will always be
placed after the verb. Some
care needs to be taken to
identify each part correctly.
5. The singular verb form is
usually reserved for units
of measurement or time.
Examples
 The dog growls when he is
angry.
 The dogs growl when they
are angry.
 The dog, who is chewing on
my jeans, is usually very
good.
 The colors of the rainbow
are beautiful.
 There is a problem with the
balance sheet.
 Here are the papers you
requested.
 Four quarts of oil was
required to get the car
running.

4. Application

The teacher will let the students to construct 5 sentences using the image
shown to explain what’s going on in the image. Follow the first five rules of
Subject-Verb Agreement in constructing sentences. Do this on a whole sheet
of paper.

5. Assessment
If the sentence is grammatically correct, write C before the number. If there is an
error in subject-verb agreement, write the correct form of the verb.
1. The date and the place of the Girl Scouts’ Jamboree has been set.
2. The photographs in the yearbook are her work.
3. One of todays’s English lessons are not easy to comprehend.
4. The president, with his cabinet, is going to the luncheon meeting.
5. Are you aware that the sale of the tickets have started?
6. The decision of the director stand.
7. Everyone on these islands are very friendly.
8. On the beach, Jackson sings.
9. The child looks at the picture inside the room.
10. Beneath these buildings are an underground stream.

6. Assignment
1. Write examples for each of the first five rules of the subject-verb agreement.
2. Give the three remaining rules and give examples for each of the remaining
rules.
