Assessment. The effective educator consistently:

a. Analyzes and applies data from multiple assessments and measures to diagnose students’ learning needs,
informs instruction based on those needs, and drives the learning process;
b. Designs and aligns formative and summative assessments that match learning objectives and lead to mastery;
c. Uses a variety of assessment tools to monitor student progress, achievement and learning gains;
d. Modifies assessments and testing conditions to accommodate learning styles and varying levels of
knowledge;
e. Shares the importance and outcomes of student assessment data with the student and the student’s
parent/caregiver(s); and
f. Applies technology to organize and integrate assessment information.

4A: Analyzes and applies data from multiple assessments and measures to diagnose students’ learning needs,
informs instruction based on those needs, and drives the learning process;

Analyzing multiple assessments helps the teacher gain a better understanding of the individual students and what
needs they will have or what changes to instruction need to be made. This can be done in all subjects and is one of
the most beneficial forms of data collection. I have done this in both math and science throughout this academic
year. I collect various forms of data including exit slips, checkpoints or independent work, take home assignments,
anecdotal notes, and unit tests. These are all stored in individual student folders for further review. I use these to
plan further lessons or modify existing ones.

4B: . Designs and aligns formative and summative assessments that match learning objectives and lead to mastery;
When designing the assessments, it is important to be sure that you match the learning objectives. These
assessments must be able to show that the students have demonstrated what was expected to have been taught.
All of my assessments both formative and summative have been aligned to the learning objectives. All have been
pre-planned and many have been modified along the way to better match the objectives. Below is an example of a
summative assessment that was aligned with the learning objectives.
4 c. Uses a variety of assessment tools to monitor student progress, achievement and learning gains;
Assessments help teachers design future lessons and plan for further instruction or modifications to lessons.
Assessments tools can utilize technology, anecdotal notes, student responses, or student work such as exit slips. I
have done this a few times. One time in particular was when I used both rubrics as well as anecdotal notes for a
math lesson. I attached the rubrics to an exit slip for students to self-assess and for me to assess afterwards. I used
the anecdotal notes to gain insight into their specific strengths and challenges with the lesson. I was able to use
these collaboratively to gather more sufficient data that helped me plan further.

4D Modifies assessments and testing conditions to accommodate learning styles and varying levels of knowledge.
Modifying the testing conditions or the assignments helps in various ways depending on the student. This may be
from a learning disability or a language barrier. I have done this a few times this semester. One of my DHH
students is also an ELL student. I have modified both her testing conditions as well as various assessments by
adding different images, allowing her more resources and letting her visually represent things on her desk by
drawing on them with a white board marker.
4E Shares the importance and outcomes of student assessment data with the student and the student’s
parent/caregiver(s);
Communication about student data and outcomes is important for both the students as well as the families. This
allows the students and families to track the progress throughout the year as well as allow the parents to be aware of
what the students are learning on a daily or weekly basis. I have done this in a few specific instances. One way is
when I send home reports of test scores for each individual child. I have a template for the students to staple in their
planners. This paper states that the students took a specific test on the topic of ( ) and that they received a score of
( ). This allows the parents to send any further questions about the test back in the planner for the teacher.

4F: Applies technology to organize and integrate assessment information.

Technology is a useful tool in organizing and integrating information collected from assessments. There are many
ways to formatively collect data from technology as well as summative collect the data. This is important because
it is another tool for teachers to use and it offers an easy way to gain insight into different learning behaviors and
academic levels of students. One way I have done this is by using a various I-Ready lesson that I have created to
monitor the students learning. This data was collected by the I-Ready program and showcased specific areas of
need. It is organized into categories such as math strengths with number sense, critical thinking strategies, etc.…
