MOUNTSTUART ELPHINSTONE

British Governor of Bombay province in India, renowned as the efficient administrator, historian and educator.
He was of the view that "the teaching of English should not be started here at once, but to educate the native
people and give them higher positions."Elphinstone introduced as a founder of the studies in native language
and English language was first introduced in Mumbai. He preferred to educate the natives and print children's
books. In his commemoration, Elphinstone Institute or High School and Elphinstone College were established in
Mumbai.

Influence of English on Marathi Prose

C. Jarvis and Major Thomas Caddy won the award for the use of punctuation marks in Marathi prose and wrote
the booklet 'Definition of Punctuation'. He was a colleague of Molsworth, who made an early important lecture
in Marathi. The dictionary is known as 'Molesworth-Caddy's Dictionary'. C. Jarvis contributed significantly to the
creation of textbooks. He wrote books on mathematics, creating new terminology in classical subjects like
mathematics and geometry. In 1979, the circular about the prize encouraged the translation and writing of
books. This circular had a profound impact on the culture and prose writing style.

DeccanCollege, Pune
One of the three oldest institutes in India. Khanderao Dabhade, the Maratha Commander in chief,
made a custom of donation to the Sanskrit Pundits for teaching Sanskrit to teach Sanskrit. Mount
Stuart Elphinstone founded the 'Hindu College' for the study of Sanskrit through this Charity Fund in
the year 1821. It was named 'Poona College' and 'Deccan College' respectively. During 1939, for the
first time, three departments of archeology, Maratha history and linguistics were started at the Indian
University. Archaeological remains are preserved in the College of Archeology, which runs a long-term
Sanskrit dictionary project.

Sir J.J. School Of Arts


Est. 1878
The Sir Jamshetjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art (Sir J.J. School of Art) is the oldest and one of the
most important art education institutes in India. Sir Jamsetji Jeejeebhoy took the initiative for
establishment and growth of the organization and his name was given to the organization. Initially, the
purpose of the art-school was to 'teach painting, drawing and decoration, artistic, pottery, metalwork
and wood carving'. Over time, courses on art education, craft, handicraft, handicraft, handwriting etc.
were started.
One of the first three universities in India, founded by Wood's despatch. Elphinstone was the first
Chancellor and Sir William Yardley the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. Balshastri Jambhekar, R.
G. Bhandarkar, Justice Ranade, Ferozshah Mehta, Lokmanya Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Mahatma
Gandhi, Swatantryavir Savarkar. It is the first university to compose Marathi subject.

Lokmanya Bal GangadharTilak


(23 July, 1856- 1 Aug. 1920)
National and Western education sponsors. Tilak, who taught mathematics and Sanskrit, did not get
paid. Tilak, Agarkar and Chiplunkar established the 'New English School' in Pune. He also established
'Aryabhushan Press' and started two newspapers 'Kesari' (Marathi) and 'Maratha' (English) in 1884.
With the help of Vedderburn, Wordsworth, Mandlik, Telang, Dandekar, Kelkar, Bhandarkar and others,
Tilak-Agarkar established 'Deccan Education Society' and started 'Ferguson College' (1885). Kelly. Also
his experiments in printing the Marathi alphabet succeeded in England. Many improvements were made
accordingly in Marathi Tankas. Some of his important books are 'Geeta Rahasya', 'Orayan', 'Arctic
Home in the Vedas'.

Gopal KrushnaGokhale
(1866-1895)
Principal, great social reformer, advocate for women's freedom and education. M Gandhi considered
him a Guru. Reformers, public meetings, national news, etc. From the newspaper, he brought forth
clear ideas about social reforms and education. Gokhale was instrumental in the formation of a law
known as the Morley-Minto Amendment (1919). He said that primary education should be free so that
people of all levels should have access to education.
Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade
1842-1901
Thoughtful thinker of political, economic, religion and social reform as a whole. He emphasized human
conscience rather than traditions and scriptures in order to establish equality and justice among human
beings by eliminating race and religion. He laid the foundation of organizational politics in Maharashtra
by contributing to the formation of several institutions like the Congress. Justice Ranade has a
considerable share in starting the tradition of Marathi Sahitya Sammelan

College of Engineering, Pune

Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical school was established in july 1854 to educate the lower
level officers of the Public Works Department. Agriculture and forestry classes were started in 1929.
The college was named as "The Puna Civil Engineering College", "The College of Science", "College of
Engineering, Poona" respectively.
A Student of this college is Bharat Ratna M. Vishweshwaraiya, the world renowned son of India in
whose honour Engineers' Day is celebrated in India.
Most of the architectural work credit in India goes to the students of this college. 'Victoria Golden
Jubilee Institute wsa started in Mumbai in 1887. After World War I, a professional and graduate college
was established in Satara, Dhule, Nagpur.

Jagannath Shankarshet
(1803-1865)
Elphinstone organized the Elphinstone High school and Schoolbook congregations in 1822, Nana was
among the main pillars. Later, it was transformed into a Bombay Native Education Society in 1824.
After Elphinstone, an Elphinstone fund of Rs. 4,43,901 was raised to facilitate higher education. Nana
worked as its main trustee. For the sake of education to all, Nana took to Elphinstone College (1837),
Grant Medical College (1845), Student Literary and Scientific Society (1848), a girls' school (1849), Law
College (1855), The 'Jagannath Shankarashet First Grade Anglo Vernacular School' (1857) etc.
educational institutions were establised.
He was also actively involved in the establishment of the Sir J. J. School of Art. Nana donated
donations to a number of respected organizations.

The Asiatic Society, Mumbai


Est. 26 Nov. 1804

The Literary Society of Bombay was established under the chairmanship of Sir James Mackintosh.
This organization was transformed into the Royal Asiatic Society, Mumbai in 1826. It is a
knowledgeable institution, collecting and devoting resources to Eastern cultures, history, sciences, arts,
literature. The organization has a big role to play in creating many reputed Saraswatas in Maharashtra.

Balshashtri Jambhekar
(6 January 1812 – 18 May 1846)
Balshashtri Jambhekar, the first newspaper 'Darpan' in Marathi, started from Mumbai on the 1832. The
first issue of 'Mirror' also mentioned the goals of 'entertaining, reporting on the running time and
showing the way to get fit'. Newspapers played an important role in nationalism and social reform. The
importance of the newspaper is widespread by the philanthropists, while Tilak has said that newspapers
are the custodian and advocate of the Rayat.
