ICMR to launch creative programs


in bio-medical sciences during the Centenary Year
New Delhi, 13 Nov. - On the occasion of the Foundation Day coinciding with the completion of
one hundred years of its glorious existence in the service of the nation, Shri Gulam Nabi Azad,
Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India will launch on 15 November year-
long Centenary Celebration of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a premier agency to
conduct, promote and coordinate bio-medical research in India. Dr. Vishwa Mohan Katoch,
Secretary, Department of Health Research, Govt. of India and Director General, ICMR told that
the inauguration of the Centenary Celebration will be held with jubilation at India Islamic Cultural
Centre in New Delhi. Both Shri Dinesh Trivedi and Shri S.Gandhiselvan, Hon’ble Ministers of
State for Health and Family Welfare will address the distinguished gathering.

The celebration will be noticeable for several creative activities such as preparation of illustrative
documents highlighting the landmark discoveries and innovations in the past hundred years by
ICMR and its predecessor Indian Research Fund Association, theme based international
conferences focusing on Tuberculosis, Kala Azar, Diarrhoea, Malaria, AIDS and malnutrition
etc. that have been widely effecting the people of India.

Among other things, series of conferences may provide platform for taking stock of the past
achievements in addition to getting exposure to refreshing ideas for planning future strategies
essential to the control of emerging new diseases. The other major activities that will be
performed during the centenary year are: publication of Monographs on cancer, chronic life-
style diseases and neurosciences etc., launching of several activities of scientific nature by a
network of 28 research Institutes dotting the landscape of India at strategic locations, publication
of information brochures for enhancing public understanding of the role of ICMR and its
contributions towards health and medical research, orations by Prof. M.S.Swaminathan and
C.Gopalan focusing on the milieu of scientific research in the country, quizzes for students of
medical schools and introduction of medals at the level of top three Junior and Senior Research
Fellowships each in addition to the Post-doctoral fellowship. Some of the activities will
emphasize on capacity building by organizing workshops and initiation of a few focused
activities for dissemination of science to the common man. The activities will coincide with
several important dates of national and international significance with regard to diseases and
health in general.
