Department of Anesthesia
Department of Anesthesiology
ANESTHESIA
The original National Kidney Foundation which there was dedicated to renal
surgical procedures and has expanded to include all services except cardiac surgery and OB
and renamed as National Kidney and Transplant Institute.
HIGHLIGHTS OF ACHIEVEMENTS:
Beyond the operating room theater, we render anesthesia care to ambulatory cases
such as Peripheral and Coronary Angioplasty, ESWL, Diagnostic CT scan, MRI, and Nuclear.
We give anesthesia service to state of the art procedures like endovascular aortic repair for
aortic aneurysm.
All procedures and cases were made possible with the acquisition of the latest state
of the art anesthesia equipments. All anesthetic procedures are thoroughly monitored using
state of the art monitoring like oxymetry, capnography, BISpectral monitor (measure of
depth of anesthesia), and TOF watch for neuromuscular block.
The anesthesia department employs newer technique like target controlled infusion
for total intravenous anesthesia, regional blocks using ultrasound.
4
• The Anesthesia Department presently composed of 7 practicing consultants:
Aside from outside rotation of the trainees they also do Ambulatory cases as well as
acute and chronic pain management, organ transplantation and critical care. Exposure to
research and doing research papers are part of their curriculum.
At the end of the three-year course, the trainees should be able to:
– Provide safe and quality anesthesia care for all surgical, obstetrical,
diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
– Do proficiently pre- and post- operative evaluation of patients
– Manage competently, evaluation and treatment of critically ill patients,
fluid and electrolyte replacement, and respiratory therapy
– Perform competently, resuscitative procedures inside and outside the
operating room complex
– Provide pain relief by nerve blocks, and other accepted anesthetic
procedures
– Be proficient in the application of the working principles of the anesthesia
machine and monitoring devices, both invasive and non-invasive, as well
as other adjunctive equipment
– Develop an analytical attitude toward available scientific and clinical
information, and do investigative procedures or research
– Provide consultation services in Anesthesiology when requested by fellow
anesthesiologists and by other specialties
5
– Qualify for certification by the Philippine Board of Anesthesiology as a
Diplomate.
– Be a teacher in anaesthesiology.

Department of Internal Medicine
Department of Internal Medicine
History
The Department of Internal Medicine of the National Kidney and Transplant
INTERNAL MEDICINE
Institute is an accredited training institution for internal medicine by the Philippine Specialty
Board of Internal Medicine of the Philippine College of Physicians. It was organized in 1987
by Director Filoteo Alano with the late Dr. Benigno Agbayani as the department's first chair.
From a handful of active consultant staff and an initial two (2) residents in 1987, the
department now (2013) has more than 40 active consultant staff, has trained 95residents in
Internal Medicine as of 2012, and has an in-training staff of 23 residents. Most of the
graduates have pursued subspecialty training in various fields of Internal Medicine and
others have sought further foreign training in the United States, Australia, and Singapore.
Other than internal medicine training, the department also has subspecialty training in
oncology, organized in 2005 by Dr. Gloria Cristal - Luna.
To achieve its mission, the department has regularly held workshops to assess its
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It has continued to “cross the river by feeling
the stones” (ancient proverb by Deng Xiaoping). It means implementing reforms in a manner
where the department advances step-by-step by summing up the situation from their
experience, both positive and negative, to reach its goal of excellence.
Consultant staff
The department is proud to have within its active consultant staffs, an elite core of
physicians representing the different subspecialties of internal medicine. The executive
committee, composed of the training officer, the head of research and organizational and
staff development committee, the head of service committee, head of admissions, and the
immediate past chairman, manages the programs of the department. The different sections
of internal medicine, which include cardiology, pulmonary medicine, gastroenterology,
infectious diseases, endocrinology, nephrology, hematology, neurology, oncology,
dermatology, rheumatology and allergy/immunology, psychiatry, and clinical nutrition,
provide a comprehensive care for each patient.
Commitment to service
The department's commitment to service is continually being reevaluated and
improved. It attends to 37% of hospital admissions and 22% of the charity out-patient
services. It also handles the emergency room as ER officer, the intensive care unit,
intermediate medical care unit and charity medicine admissions numbering 313 last year
within a budget of 10-15% of the institutional budget allocation. The continuous expansion of
the institution, the opening of the much bigger emergency room, and the decreasing subsidy
from the government will definitely be a challenge for the department. But this will be a
challenge that the department will face with enthusiasm and vigor in order to achieve
excellence in the delivery of healthcare.
9
Research development
Development of quality researches has also been a thrust of the department for the
past years. Despite some hindrances to research, the department was able to produce
several quality researches through the effective mentoring and guidance of the residents in
the research development process. Most of the research papers won in the annual institution-
wide research forum and most were presented in national meetings as poster or oral
presentation with a number making it for international presentations and for publication in
national and international peer reviewed journals.
Other achievements
For several years, the department has been awarded as the Best Department in the
Emergency Room. The residents are also proud to gain other recognitions as: Best NKTI
employee, Best ER Officer, and won inter-hospital contests, including the much-desired Annual
PCP-Pfizer Quiz contest (1995 and 2009 Grand Champion). The graduates of the
department have a consistent 100% passing rate for the certifying board examination of the
Philippine Specialty Board of Internal Medicine (2005-2013).
Organizational development
In its quest to achieve its mission of quality patient care through the pursuit of
excellence in training, research and healthcare, the department has embarked on a process
of change that includes a patient safety program and the development of leadership
competencies in its residency training. These include leadership qualities of integrity,
compassion, good communication skills, professionalism, discipline, and work excellence
among many others. Personal coaching and mentoring have provided the needed support to
the residents who have been adjusting to the challenges of residency training. A total
performance management cycle evaluating consultants and residents was also started.
The department will press on to live within the healer's mission, to have the heart and
mind of a compassionate physician, to always be open to change, to be in an attitude of
learning, to behave as competently as the rest of the world, and to pursue excellence for an
excellent service to our people and for God's greater glory.

Nuclear Medicine Division
Nuclear Medicine
The Nuclear Medicine Division provides both diagnostic and therapeutic services to
adult and pediatric patient population. Our two new SPECT gamma cameras are the
NUCLEAR MEDICINE
mainstays for high-quality scintigraphic procedures that cover various specialties like:
We offer routine radioactive iodine therapy for hyperthyroid and thyroid cancer
patients and we are capable of performing special procedures like selective internal
radiotherapy using Yttrium-90 microspheres for hepatic malignancies as well as radionuclide
synovectomy.
We are also partners with the different clinical specialties of the institute in
providing training and research activities to the residents, fellows and interns.
Soon, a state-of-the-art PET-CT scanner will be installed that will allow us to add
molecular and metabolic imaging to our diagnostic procedures. This will be possible with the
medical cyclotron which will be housed nearby within hospital premises producing positron-
emitting radiopharmaceuticals.
Together with the institute's radiologists, the PET-CT facility will provide molecular
fusion imaging with proven high diagnostic accuracy in various specialties like Oncology
(FDG imaging for various malignancies), Neurology (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease)
and Cardiology (myocardial perfusion/viability).

beginnings of the Section of Urology, then under the Department of Surgery. Under the
wings of the three pillars in Urology, Drs. Benjamin Magsino, Abelardo Prodigalidad and
Genaro Yusi, it immediately created an impact in the local urologic community by
establishing at the time of its inception a residency training program. Soon after, the
patients came and the Urology service was born, with an exponential growth in
consultations and surgical procedures performed over the next two decades. Throughout
the years, this section came into its own, being elevated to full department status, and at
present is one of the biggest contributors to the hospital revenue.
