MAED SAS – 1 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Reflection No. 5

1. As an educator/future educator, do you think you can teach leadership skills to your
students? How will you do it?

As an elementary educator, it is really one of my responsibilities to teach leadership skills

to my pupils. As the young generation is the hope of our future, they must possess these skills as
they grow up and utilize it along the way. Inside the classroom setup, there are many ways that I
can teach these leadership skills. At the very start of the day, every morning, my class already
knows each of their assigned tasks. They are aware that they have the responsibilities in doing
so. Taking responsibility is one of the leadership skills they must possess. Another skill that I am
already teaching to my pupils is honesty. Even before I am not taking this leadership subject, I
want to instill the act of being truthful to others since they are still young. It is important for them
to know that lying will not cause good to themselves and others. There are other leadership skills
that unknowingly I am already teaching to them. In group activity, listening and communicating
is taught. Likewise, hard work and perseverance to finish their assigned task is inculcated.

2. What are the characteristics of a democratic leader do you think you have? How do
you practice it in real life?

As an aspiring democratic leader, I think I possessed most of its characteristics like

seeking others opinion. I cannot decide hastily without asking others opinion because I want to
be sure that I get the consensus of the people around me. Also, I loved to offer help and guidance
to others particularly in our school. In a situation that my colleagues need my help, even without
asking, I am always available to offer my hand without asking for return. Lastly, I am also
cooperative. I always wanted to have a good relationship to my co-teachers and one of the ways
to have it is to cooperate with them. It is nice to have the feeling that the person you are dealing
with every day is like a family to you.

3. What are the roles and responsibilities do you think you are lacking as a leader?
What should you do to enhance it?

There is no perfect leader. Even the best leader in the world also has its weakness. But
these imperfections can be improved if you have the willingness to do it. As an aspiring leader, I
think I do lack the characteristic of being a good decision-maker. As a leader who adopts a
democratic style of leadership, I tend to consider the opinions of others before deciding what the
best for the group is. As they say, experience is the best teacher. I can enhance it by observing
my superiors in their decision-making skills. I will imitate the good points they have and learn
from the things that I think is off the beam. I also need to gain more experience in supervision.
As a newbie teacher, I am looking forward to develop this skill as I will experience new
challenges and overcome obstacles in my chosen field.

4. As a leader how can you tell that you have an effective team?

As a leader, I can say that I have an effective team if I can observe that: trust is evident
among my members; conflicts arise are easy to manage, they are committed in the group and to
the goals, they are accountable in their decisions, and focus more on the teams’ goals and
objectives.
5. How can you apply coaching leadership in your team organization or school? What
coaching tips can you share with your team?

In coaching leadership style, there is the presence of collaboration, support and guidance
among the group, focusing on bringing out the best in each member by guiding them in every
challenge that they may face. To apply it in our school, giving immediate feedback is a must.
Whether it is a positive or a constructive one, feedback should be clear and actionable. Since
coaching focuses more in the success of the members, the teams will also be successful. on using
DepEd portals and I give effective feedback to all of their concerns about it and other technology
concerns. One of the coaching tips I can give to them is building relationships. Since it is easier
to be more creative and productive if you have good camaraderie among your colleagues, this
will result to a more successful team. I also want to inspire them to be passionate in what they
want to achieve. This will motivate them towards our goals. Another tip that I can give them is to
focus on the solution and not to the errors. It is better to spend time thinking out for the best
solution rather than focusing on the mistakes made.
