Lesson objective(s):
Students will create a collage that accurately represents the main ideas and themes of Beowulf.

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

This lesson will use collaboration and writing practices that will address the various learning styles of the students.

ENGAGEMENT
I will first show my students an example of the digital collage, but for a story that we have referenced a lot in comparison to
Beowulf: Shrek. I will explain why everything in the collage is relevant and why it was chosen for the assignment. We will look
at various pictures and videos that are included and talk about how they relate to the main ideas and themes of the story.

What kind of questions should the students ask themselves after the engagement?
- What is the authors tone?
- What is the theme of Beowulf?
- Are there any motifs or symbols that informed your previous answer? If so, identify them with textual evidence.

EXPLORATION
I will then give students time to explore and find one picture or video that relates to one theme of   Beowulf (Identity, Heroic
Code, Good vs. Evil, etc.). Students will find one picture that ties to one theme and then complete a Turn-N-Talk with a
partner. They will discuss why they chose their picture and how it relates to the theme they've chosen.

List “big idea” conceptual questions the teacher will use to encourage and/or focus students’ exploration
- Theme
- Motif
- Symbolism
- Figurative Language: Kennings, Extended Metaphors, Personification

EXPLANATION
I will then explain the full assignment. Students will expand on their starting collection. They will find more pictures and more
themes to represent the themes of Beowulf. On the next page, they will have to provide an AECECEC paragraph that
provides textual evidence and explanations of their collage.

ELABORATION
We will conduct a virtual gallery walk as a way to view, interpret, and analyze each other's work. Each student will post their
work on the discussion board on Schoology. Each student will have to respond to two of their peers' work.
