This module is designed to develop your technical know-how and technical skills in creating
computer-aided drawing. As you go through the series of this module, you will learn the different
hardware components and how to use them. Likewise, you will study the basic commands and other
features of AUTOCAD, how to activate them, and determine when to use each command. It will
prepare you for the development of competency needed in preparing computer-aided drawings
of architectural and structural plans. It covers the knowledge, attitude, and skills based on the industries
standard that must be developed in you.
There are learning activities that you need to go through in this learning material. You are
required to answer pre-test to determine your level and needs. In the “What is It” section, you need to
read and understand the discussion of the lesson to gain essential knowledge. After acquiring the

INTRODUCTION
Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) is the use of computer system in creating, modifying, and
analysing architectural design. It is the process of creating technical drawings with the use of computer
hardware and computer software to design objects both in two-dimensional (2D) and three-
dimensional (3D) space.
AutoCAD is one of the software created by Autodesk . It has many versions and AutoCAD
Architecture is one of them. It has built in features designed for drawing walls, roof, beams and other
components of the house. AutoCAD can maintain precise dimension spacing and has library of pre-built
components to help speed up the drafting process.
Efficient and effective use of mouse and keyboard while drawing in AutoCAD is vital in CAD system.
This lesson provides learning experiences to help you learn the knowledge and skill of using these two
hardware components and gain basic information about AutoCAD as an application software.
General Objective: Identify CAD hardware requirements and software features according to the
software provider

MOUSE
Computer mouse are handheld input device that control the cursor in a GUI (Graphical User Inter-
face). They are used to position the cursor on the computer screen, select and move text, click command
icons, and open files and folders in your computer. Mouse are either wired or wireless. Wireless mouse are
connected to the system through radio frequency. They are equipped with transmitter, battery, and receiver
that is plugged in into computer's USB port. Wired mouse on the other hand use cable and connector and
are directly attached to the computer system.

TOPIC 2: KEYBOARD
What is It
Direction: Read the article below with comprehension. If there are words or terms you do not
know, note them down then look for their meaning in the dictionary or you may search the web. Read
again the article to fully understand its contents.
KEYBOARD
Keyboard is one of the primary devices the end users use to communicate with the computer. It is
composed of buttons called "keys" with letters, numbers, and symbols arranged in a manner that can be
easily reached by our fingers as we type. Keyboard with QWERTY layout is widely used.
Today, most desktop computer keyboards connect to the computer using either USB or Bluetooth
for wireless communication. As an input device, it is used only to send data to a computer. It does not
receive any information back.
Keyboard must be connected and installed properly to the computer for effective use. Its position is
also important. If you are using desktop computer, it is advised that you place your keyboard directly in
front of you and about your elbow height to be able to type with your shoulder in a natural position and
consequently avoid pain.
It is composed of different groups of keys that are used to encode data and send them to the
computer system. The function of each key may differ from one program to another. In AutoCad, most
of the keys are used in activating ACAD commands and setting the working environment based on job
requirements.
Getting familiar with the keyboard keys, knowing how they works, and employing techniques of
using them can lead to efficient and faster drafting and encoding.
Letter Keys Letter keys are found at the canter of the keyboard. They are
used to encode data to be processed by the computer system.
Alphanumeric Keys Letter portion in the keyboard with keys that contains both
numbers and letters on the same key. It comes with extra button
(a "function" key) which when press with "Num Lock" key can
toggle the letter keys to number keys
Shift Key The key that is pressed on a computer keyboard when you want
to write a capital letter
Caps Lock A key on a computer keyboard that makes all letter keys
produce capital letters
Space Bar The long narrow bar at the front of a computer keyboard that
you press to make a space between words
Escape This key allows the user to stop an action, leave a program, or
return to a previous menu
Tab Tab key is used to move several spaces along the same line
Alt Key A keyboard key that you press together with another key so that
the other key does something different from what it usually
does
Backspace Key Erases one character to the left of the cursor. It is used to
moved one space backward
Delete Key Erases one character to the right of the cursor. Pressing the
DELETE key can erase the entire selection in the document if
selected
Function Key A special button on a computer keyboard that is used for a

COMPUTER SOFTWARE
Software is the language of computer. It is a set of instructions that tells a computer what to do.
Software comprises the entire set of programs, procedures, and routines associated with the operation
of a computer system.
Essentially, computer software are divided into three main groups depending on their use and
application.
A. Operating Software
The operating or system software is a collection of programs designed to operate, control, and
extend the processing capabilities of the computer itself. It serves as the interface between the
hardware and the end users. System software controls a computer's internal functioning and manages
peripherals connected to the system such as monitors, printers, and storage devices.
B. Programming Languages
C. Application Software
Application software directs the computer to execute commands given by the user. It is designed to
satisfy a particular need in an specific working environment. It is responsible for the processing of
data. It may consists of a single program, such as Microsoft's Notepad for writing and editing simple
text. Word processors, spreadsheets, database management, and network software are among the
many application programs designed to perform specific task.
AutoCAD is a computer-aided design (CAD) software that Engineers, Architects, and other
professionals used to create precise 2D and 3D models with solids, surfaces, and mesh object.
Latest versions provide specialized toolsets such as Architectural, Electrical, Mechanical, MEP, MAP
3D, Raster design, and Plant 3D toolsets.
For efficient and effective use of this software, it is important that its hardware requirements are met.
The tables below outline the system requirements of different versions of AutoCAD from the
newest down to AutoCAD 2014.
