The American party system reemerged between the years 1820 through 1840. The

Democrats came into existence during the elections of 1824 when Andrew and his supporters

rallied against John Q. Adams. Then John C Calhoun did not agree with Andrew Jackson beliefs

and formed the Whig Party. The debate over States’ rights caused many problems among the

people and caused separation. Differences among beliefs resulted in the reappearances of a two

party system.

Andrew Jackson’s beliefs greatly influenced the reemerging of a two party system.

Jackson introduced the Democratic Party to the United States, supporting the return of Thomas

Jefferson’s ideas. Andrew Jackson strongly disliked liked banks for their schemes. Then during

the Nullification crisis, Jackson rejected the concept of nullification and his Vice President John

C. Calhoun resigned as Vice President. John C. Calhoun went on in forming the Whig party

which opposed Andrew Jackson. Now again, a second party system was involved. The Whigs

did not like Jackson and proposed things such as the expansion of bank credit and higher tariffs.

All these were contraire to Jackson’s beliefs. The two party system now challenged each other

and the two party system formed through influences of Andrew Jackson’s beliefs.

Another influence in the reemergence of a two party system was the problems with

States’ rights. The issue with states’ rights was influenced with Jackson’s philosophy of the

“common man”. Democrats were in favor for State rights and believed that the “common man”

should be involved in the government by voting. They also believed in a loose constitution.

However, the Whigs thought of themselves as conservatives. The Whigs were progressive in

their support of active government programs and reforms. They called for internal improvements

such as canals, railroads, telephone lines, etc. Ironically during the Nullification crisis Jackson
fought for federal power over state rights. This occurred when it was proposed that South

Carolina did not have to pay tariffs. John C. Calhoun’s “South Carolina Exposition” proposed

that States should have to the right to nullify such laws. South Carolina was nullifying federal

law which angered Jackson. Because of the different ideas/beliefs two parties were formed.

Different philosophies influenced the reemergence of a two party system in America.

Andrew Jackson’s philosophy created problems with John C. Calhoun which led to his resigning

and the formation of the Whigs. State Rights disputes further separated the people and became a

great problem. The Whigs were formed and opposed Andrew Jackson. With the Whigs in

existence, there was once again two parties. The two party system reemerged because of the

beliefs of Andrew Jackson.
