QUESTION 1 [20 MARKS]

a) What is polymeric materials and how do you classify them? [2 marks]

b) Distinguish between traditional and engineering ceramic materials. [2 marks]

c) Classify the composite according to their matrix. [3 marks]

d) Glass and quartz are categorized as ceramic. Both contain silica (SiO2).
Explain the bonding that exist in glass and quartz. [4 marks]

e) Explain why quartz has high melting point, high tensile strength
compared to glass. [3 marks]

f) Determine the following for BCC, FCC and HCP unit cell;
i) The coordination number. [3 marks]
ii) The Miller indices of closed-packed surface. [3 marks]

a) Describe and illustrate the following planar defect.


i) Low angle tilt boundaries [2 marks]
ii) Stacking faults [2 marks]
iii) Twist [2 marks]

b) If there are 16 grains per square 2.54 x 10 -2 m (1 inch2) on a photomicrograph


taken at a magnification of 100 times. Calculate the ASTM grain size number.

c) Explain on the packing of long-chain polymers in semi-crystalline structure.

d) A tensile stress is to be applied on 10 mm diameter of cylindrical brass. Determine


the amount of force (in N) required to produce strain () of 7.35 10-4 if the
deformation is entirely elastic. (Given EBrass = 97 GPa) [5 marks]

e) Consider a fiber reinforced polymer composite,


i) What are the mechanical properties matrix phase should have? [2 Marks]

QUESTION 3 (20 MARKS)

a) Figure 1 shows the stress-strain characteristics of a polymer. Illustrate on the


deformation of polymer that occur at -40 C to 140 C. [5

b) i) What is the resulting mechanical properties of ceramic materials using


Equation 1? [1 marks]

ii) Show that the toughening mechanism of Partially Stabilized Zirconia (PSZ) can
be achieved by phase transformation. [4 marks]
c) A metal-matrix composite is made with a metal matrix of Al6061 alloy and 32 %
(by volume) of alumina (Al2O3) fiber layered continuously. Solve the Modulus of
Elasticity (Ec) of the composite under isostrain condition. (Given E Al2O3= 395 GPa
and EAl 6061 = 68.9 GPa.). Show whether E c will be higher or lower when under
isostress condition. [5 Marks]

d) Explain on the metal degradation by corrosion caused by mechanical vibrations


and applied stress. [5 Marks]

(a) Describe and draw the heat treatment cooling curve process on eutectoid plain

carbon steel using the isothermal transformation diagram in Figure 2.

QUESTION 5 [20 MARKS]

a) What is binary isomorphous alloy system? [2 marks]

b) Construct the liquidus and solidus phase boundary of a binary isomorphous phase
diagram that can be determined experimentally. [3 marks]

c) Figure 3 shows the Pb-Sn binary eutectic phase diagram. Make phase analysis of
the weight percent of the phases present at points a, b, c, d, e for a lead-tin (Pb-Sn)
alloy that consists of 40 wt % Sn. [10 marks]
