texts when responding to and composing texts.

EN1-11D Responds to and composes a range of texts about familiar aspects of the world and their own
experiences.

preferences
Learning Students are learning to use descriptive language to add details to their sentences.
Intention
Success I can add details to my sentences by using descriptive language such as adjectives and
Criteria adverbs.
Differentiation Emergent students – Provide these students with additional support when ‘dressing
up’ their sentences.
Extension – More capable students are encouraged to add greater detail to their
sentences.
Classroom  Students are seated on the floor
organisation  Students move to their seats, working as a class.
 Students work individually at their seats.
Procedure Engagement/ Introduction: Watch the video ‘Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives’ on
YouTube. Discuss with students ‘What is a noun? What is a verb? What is an
adjective?’. Watch the video ‘Adverbs Song’ on YouTube. Ask the students ‘What is
an adverb?’ Explain the role of using adjectives and adverbs when writing stores; to
add more detail and make it more exciting and interesting for the reader. It also allows
the reader to visualise the story.
Learning experiences:
Display the template ‘Dressing Up a Sentence’. Read the headings in the table and
explain that, by using these words, you can add information to sentences. Pick a
sentence from the cards provided. Demonstrate how you can ‘dress up’ a sentence by
adding descriptive language e.g. adjectives and adverbs. Repeat with a few sentences.
Each student is given a worksheet (template – 4 per page). The teacher chooses a
sentence from the cards and students will ‘dress up’ the sentence then share with the
class.
Students could then choose their own cards and ‘dress up’ the sentence. Students
return to the floor and share some sentences they have written with the class.
Closure: Revise ‘What are adjectives and adverbs? How do they make the story more
interesting? What would happen if stories did not have any descriptive language?’

Questions - What is a noun? What is a verb? What is an adjective? What is an adverb?
- What are adjectives and adverbs? How do they make the story more
interesting? What would happen if stories did not have any descriptive
language?
Reflection Strategic questioning, observations of student participation and final work sample.
Evaluation Students were engaged throughout the videos/songs. The tunes were catchy and
students had memorised them by the end of the videos. They were able to recall the
meaning of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs and give examples of each.
By modelling the template, I showed students how they can ‘dress up’ their sentences
to make them more interesting and informed them that I am expecting this to be used
in their fairy tale writing. Students then completed the task creatively and were able to
construct sentences with one or more noun, verb, adjective and adverb to add detail to
their writing and make it more interesting.
