It is desirable to review the relevant literature while understanding the research problem. It
provides base for preparing the research design of the study and conceptualizing the concepts of
the study. In this chapter a brief review of these studies, pertinent to the present research have
been presented. The review of past studies has been presented to provide a glimpse of work done
in this area.

)! ;c<<c= found that to examine the rationale behind the emergence of customer
behavior as an explicit corporate objective in retail banking and to postulate the view that if it is
to be attained it will necessitate wide ranging cultural change on a hitherto unprecedented
scale.Thereby they will recognize that cutomer services is fundamentally an externally driven
strategy being a response partly to increased competition and partly to increased demands from
customers

;c<<.= found that the nature and direction of the satisfaction that are delivered to
cutomers of bank services are explored and the criteria used to evaluate these services and
highlighted. It is reaveled that respondents had high level of satisfaction with regard to the
location and accessibility of branches and ATMs, and acceptance of the current levels of banking
fees but expressed some caution in their evaluation of new and improved services.

*! ;c<<>= stated that at present banks and building societies cross-subsidize certain type
of accounts, namely student accounts, from profits made in other areas of their business. The
banks and building societies offer free or subsidzed banking in an attempt to attract and retain
new business from people who may have higher earning capacity in the future.

*!;c<<?= points out that customers behaviours and retention are critical for retail banks, and
investigates the major determinants of customer behavior and future intentions in the retail bank
sector.

! ;c<<9= Notes that the premises of all efforts to achive customer satisfaction is the basic
assumption that customer satisfaction leads to customer loyalty. This can partly be explained by
shortcomings in satisfaction measurnment

&! ;,@@,= studied on the bank and concluded that the people have heard about the
Himachal Gramin Bank but 25% of the respondents are inetrested in opening an account with
Himachal Gramin Bank while 75% of the respondents re not interested in opening an account
with Himachal Gramin Bank.

A$ ;,@@>= studied on the bank and concluded that the people are not aware about the services
of Himachal Gramin Bank. Few people have cuurent account with Himachal Gramin bank. They
may have accounts in other banks.

After studying the topic in depth I feel that the bank should give stress on the following
points :

× The bank should stress on efficient financial management and should minimise the
overdues by ensuring efficient debt recovery to make itself profitable.
× In this wake of cut throat competition, the bank should emphasis on it advertisement
propaganda in order to make itself popular among common people. It should shift its
motto from customer satisfaction to customer delight.
× Formalities in working should be minimized to possible extent.
× Himachal Gramin Bank should increase its area by operation by expanding its branch
offices in rural areas.
× Number of employee should be increase so as to decrease the workload on the
existing employees, and to provide better services.
× HGB should give proper attention to priority sector such as study loan, self-
employment loans etc.
× Minimum balance in saving account should be reduced.
× Minimum rate of interest on auto loans should also be lowered, as it is quite high as
compared to some other banks.
× No. of schemes should be increased to attract the general public.
× More stress should be given on home banking.
× A customer grievance cell should be made functional and steps should be taken to
enhance speedy settlement of customer complaints.
× HGB should add more automated facilities under its network to compete with foreign
banks.
