Application
.
The BACnet router is always used where DESIGO PX automation stations must .
communicate via Ethernet/IP. .
The automation stations are connected with each other via LON and form a segment. .
Local LON segments are connected via Ethernet/IP (backbone). A BACnet router is .
required for each LON segment. .

Functions

The BACnet router transmits the BACnet protocol from LON to Ethernet/IP. This means
that the two sides form a BACnet network each. Only those packages are transmitted
which must go from one BACnet network to another. Local broadcast messages are
limited to the local network whereas global broadcasts are not limited.
BBDM In addition, the BACnet router supports the functionality of the BBMD (BACnet
Broadcast Management Device) in order to distribute the BACnet broadcast messages
across the IP routers.
The BACnet router contains a device object and can be operated by a BACnet client
(PXM20, DESIGO TOOLSET or DESIGO INSIGHT). The current operating state, date
and time as well as the statistics for the sent packages are stored in the device object.
These values can be read from the device object via simple read services.

Design

The compact construction enables the BACnet routers to be used in highly

confined spaces. A BACnet router is especially suitable for compact control panels
or buildings services systems with integrated control panels.

Engineering notes

A static IP address, a subnet mask and a default gateway must be assigned to each
BACnet router during commissioning. Normally, the network administrator is
responsible for the management of these addresses.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is not supported. It must also be noted
that BACnet communicates on IP via a static UDP port number.
The UDP port number is determined during commissioning. When using a firewall it is
necessary to enable the relevant IP address and the UDP port number.
Limitations Max. ten BACnet routers can be configured as BBMDs. This means that one site
cannot comprise more than ten IP subnets which are separated by IP routers.
Max. ten foreign devices can be entered per BBMD. .
A management station in a remote IP segment is a typical foreign device. .
.
Mounting instructions

The BACnet router can be snap-mounted on DIN rails or directly screwed to a mounting
plate.

STOP Caution! In order to prevent equipment damage and/or personal injuries always follow local
safety regulations and the required safety standards.

Installation

It is essential to adhere to the guidelines described in the mounting and installation

manual (CA1Z9251). The Ethernet connection to the next hub must, for example, not
be greater than 100 m.

Commissioning notes

The router is commissioned and configured on the LON side using the DESIGO
TOOLSET. During the commissioning the addresses and parameters of LonTalk,
UDP/IP and BACnet are added. In addition, the network numbers of the directly
connected BACnet networks are parameterised and the BBMD table is loaded.
For a unique identification of the BACnet router in the LON network press the service
pin on the printed circuit board. Alternatively, a wink command can be sent to the
.
BACnet router. After receiving a wink command the BACnet router responds with a
.
special flashing pattern (lower SERVICE LED).
.
.
Special flashing pattern After receiving the wink command the lower SERVICE LED flashes as follows: .
for wink command 21s .
00408

5 Hz 5 Hz

2s 1s 2s 1s

The SERVICE LED lights up for 2 seconds, flashes for 1 second in 5 Hz pulses, then
lights up again for 2 seconds, etc. until 21 seconds have passed.

STOP Caution! After configuration, the red LEDs must not be on or flashing.

.
Delete configuration When a BACnet Router is no longer required, the configuration should be deleted. This
.
can be done in two ways:
.
a) Delete the configuration with DESIGO TOOLSET – or...
.
b) Delete the configuration directly in the BACnet Router.
.
Procedure:
.
1. Switch off the power supply to the router
.
2. Before switching on again, press the Force Firmware Download button,
.
then switch on the power again, keeping the button depressed until the INFO-
.
LED starts flashing.
.
Result:
.
1. The configuration is deleted and the diagnostic data is reset.
.
2. Both the SERVICE-LED and the INFO-LED flash.

Maintenance

Lithium batteries usually have a life span of at least four years. The STATUS LED
flashes when the battery is low.
In order to prevent the loss of statistical data or date and time always ensure that the
power supply is on whilst changing the battery.
To change the battery pull down the front cover.

STOP Caution! To prevent hardware damage by electrostatic discharge (ESD), a wrist strap with
earth cable must be used during the battery change.

Disposal

The unit contains electric and electronic components and must not be disposed of with
domestic waste. Lithium battery, printed circuit board and housing must be disposed of
separately
The local and actual regulations must be observed.

Operating notes

A configured BACnet router supports the ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol)
ping command. Other ICMP messages and SNMP (Simple Network Management
Protocol) are not supported.
The network load on the LON side depends on the data exchange of the connected
automation stations and operator units.
The bus traffic on the IP side is generated by the management stations on Ethernet/IP
or superposed data exchange (Ethernet/IP as backbone). BACnet broadcast messages
generate further bus traffic. Broadcast messages are passed on to the BBMDs and
foreign devices.
If the Ethernet/IP network is used by other systems (e.g. data processing) these loads
must be taken into account. In comparison with the bus load of the BACnet devices the
bus load of data processing systems is higher by several factors.

BACnet device object properties

The following properties represent the current operating state of the BACnet router.
They can be read by a BACnet client via the ‘Read Property‘ service.
System_Status
OPERATIONAL Router table and device object are correctly configured.
NON_OPERATIONAL Router table or device object are not correctly configured.
à BACnet router must be configured with DESIGO TOOLSET.
Reliability

NO_FAULT_DETECTED Everything ok.

NO_OUTPUT The LON connection (Neuron chip) and /or the Ethernet connection (COM server)
à
are not ready to use. BACnet router must be configured with DESIGO
TOOLSET.
à If the status still remains on NO_OUTPUT after a renewed configuration the
BACnet router must be replaced.
