1. Huang’s Book Problem 1-4

Answer:
Mechanistic itself talks about the sciences of motion and the action on the
body forces. Therefore, Mechanistic-empirical method is a way to design
pavement by using its mechanics of materials input that refers to physical
causes. In pavement design, the input/phenomena are stress, strain, and
deflections. On the other hand, the physical cause are the wheel loads and
mechanical properties of the pavement.
It’s possible to develop a wholly mechanistic method of pavement design
because the relationship between the phenomena and the physical causes
can be solved using mathematical model.
2. Huang’s Book Problem 1-6

Answer:
-Tack coat is a layer of asphalt which applied after the prime coat and tack
coat is functioned as an adhesive to bond the tack coat and the next upper
layer. Sometimes, the tack coat also used as a protection of the layer below it.
-Prime coat is an important layer that applied directly to the aggregates/ base
before another coating is applied. The prime coat act as a binder between
granular base to the asphalt layer. The prime coat also protect the the granular
base from the weather, therefore the granular base will not damage.
The prime coat requires the use of a less viscous asphalt, hence the
application of the prime coat must be in dry condition(not raining).
3. Huang’s Book Problem 1-8

Answer:
-Surface course/the wearing course is the top course of an asphalt pavement.
It is usually constructed of dense graded HMA. The surface course which has
contact directly with the weather can increase the pavement resistance to
deterioration. Therefore, regular maintenance need to be conducted.

-Binder course/asphalt base course is the asphalt layer directly below the
surface course. Although the binder course does not have direct contact with
the weather, but the binder course have to be thick enough to decrease the
stress/strain that will be continued to below layer.
Binder course should be used under several conditions:
1. When the HMA is too thick to be compacted in one layer, so it must
be placed in two layers.
2. When the binder course consists of larger aggregates and less
asphalt and does not require as high a quality as the surface course, so
replacing a part of the surface course by the binder course results in a
more economical design.
