upstream port.
Exchange module support ‘switch’, ‘one by one’, ‘normal’ respectively, to meet different
application requirements. The different exchange modes are described below:

 Switch mode
In this mode, all upstream and downstream ports can be exchanged normally. That is, the
upstream direction can use any one or more uplink ports to forward all the service data from the
downstream port (corresponding to the PON service port) through the Layer 2 switching protocol.
In the downstream direction, the traffic data from any uplink port is forwarded to the PON
service port through the Layer 2 switching protocol.
In this mode, the data between the ONU of different PON ports is interoperable.

 One by one mode

In this mode, four or eight uplink ports correspond to four or eight downstream ports, the
corresponding relationship is: 1 on the upper port 1 corresponds to 1 slot PON board port 1, the
upper port 2 corresponds to 1 slot PON board Card port 2, and so on, the upper port 8
corresponds to 4-slot PON board port 2. The transparent transmission service between each
upper port and the corresponding PON port is isolated from other non-corresponding ports, that
is, an uplink port is shared for each PON service port.

16 / 78
 Normal mode
In this mode, the eight upper ports can be exchanged between the two ports. The eight
downstream ports are isolated from each other. The data isolation between the different PON
service ports is the isolation between the ONU in different PON ports.
The exchange control module defaults to 'normal' mode.

6.2.6 OLT VLAN Management

VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network), is a user needs (functions, departments or

19 / 78
applications, etc.) logically divided into multiple LAN segments without considering the
physical location of the virtual network technology. VLAN technology allows network
administrators to divide a physical network into different logical segments (VLAN), each
containing a set of devices with the same requirements.
The advantage of VLAN technology is that broadcast and unicast traffic within VLAN are
not forwarded to other VLAN, helping to control network traffic, simplify network management,
and improve network security.
The VLAN configuration of the OLT EPON system is divided into the VLAN configuration
of the OLT and the VLAN configuration of the ONU part. The VLAN management of the
"switch control card" section refers to the VLAN configuration and management of the OLT part.
The VLAN function of the OLT part of the EPON device is as follows:
 Supports port-based VLAN and 802.1Q-based VLAN;
 Support 4K VLAN group, VLAN ID range 1 ~ 4096;
 VLAN 1 is the default VLAN used by the system. The VLAN contains all the switching
ports. All ports default to UNTAG mode.
VLAN configuration can be applied to all switching ports, including 8 uplink ports and 8
ports connected to the PON interface;

Double click the 'Switch Control Module' icon on the left side of the main page to open
the 'Control Module Management' window and enter the 'VLAN Management' to view the

6.2.7 OLT RSTP Function

STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) is the abbreviation of spanning tree protocol. The protocol
can be applied to the loop network, through a certain algorithm to achieve path redundancy,
while the loop network is trimmed into a loopless tree network, so as to avoid the message in the
loop network proliferated and infinite loop.
The main application of the spanning tree protocol is to avoid the network loopback in the
LAN and solve the "broadcast storm" problem of the ring-to-ring Ethernet network. In a sense, it
is a kind of network protection technology that can eliminate the mistakes caused by mistake or
accident with the loop connection.
RSTP (Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol) Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol: 802.1w developed by
802.1d, this protocol will converge the network fast when the network structure is changed.
The uplink port of the device supports the Rapid Spanning Tree protocol.

Double click the 'Switch Control Module' icon on the left side of the main page to open
the 'Control Module Management' window and enter the 'RSTP' to view the page.

27 / 78
We can configure some parameters in the ‘RSTP’ page as below:

RSTP Bridge Config

 RSTP enable

Enable or disable the RSTP function via configuring ‘RSTP Enable’ option as ‘enable’ or
‘disable’.

 Max Age

Specifies the lifetime of BPDU received from the adjacent bridge of the specified port.
Legal range is 6 - 40. Unit is second.

 Bridge Forward Delay

For backward compatibility with STP bridges. For ports operating in STP mode, the
forwarding delay timer specifies the time at which the port is in a discarded state before
transitioning to the learning state and is in a learning state before the learning state transitions to
the forwarding state time. The legal range is 4 - 30. Unit is second.

 Transmit Hold Count(BPDU Packets Rate)

Set the maximum number of BPDU that can be sent in a network within 1 second. You can
set the range to 1 to 10, unit is frames per second.

 Bridges Priority

Bridge priority is used to elect the root bridge of the network. The smaller the value, the
higher the priority, the greater the chance of being elected as the root bridge. The bridge priority
values that can be set are 0, 4096, 8192, 12288, 16384, 20480, 24576, 28672, 32768, 36864,
40960, 45056, 49152, 53248, 57344 and 61440.

 Hello Time

Set the interval for sending BPDU for a bridge, range is 1 to 2 . Unit is seconds.

28 / 78
In addition to the above configurable parameters, you can also view:

 Bridges MAC Address

That is current mac address of the bridge.

 Root Bridge MAC Address

The mac address of the selected root bridge device in the network.

 Root Bridge Priority

Displays the priority of the selected root bridge in the current network.

 Root Path Cost

Display the path cost of the current root bridge.

RSTP Port Parameter Configuration

 RSTP Priority

When the link cost and the sending bridge ID are the same, the port with the lowest
priority becomes the forwarding port. The parameter value is 0 ~ 240, the step is 16.

 Path Cost

Path cost is used to calculate the link cost. If the sending bridge ID is the same, the port
with the lowest root link cost becomes the forwarding port. The legal range is 1 - 200000000.

 Protocol Version Inspection(mCheck)

Enabling the protocol version check function forces the mode of the specified port to be
synchronized with the version of the next received BPDU.

 Set Edge Port

If the specified port is an edge port, the edge port does not need to
discarding-learning-forwarding and directly switches to the forwarding state.

 Link Status

Specifies whether the port is a point-to-point port and the point-to-point port allows fast
transition to the forwarding state. The non-point-to-point port needs to be
discarding-learning-forwarding to transition to the forwarding state.

In addition, we can also view the status of the port, link status and STP status and other
information.

6.2.8 ONU Authentication Management

Through the ‘authMethodV2’ drop-down box at the top of the page, we can select one of
five ways, such as ‘disable’, ‘Mac’, ‘Loid’, ‘Hybrid’, ‘Blacklist’, ‘whitelist’. Five kinds of
authority methods were explained as follows:
1) Disable

The OLT does not authenticate the access ONU, and all ONU can register with the OLT.
The system works by default in that way.

2) Mac Address Blacklist

When the authentication mode is set to blacklist, the MAC addresses added to the MAC
address list are illegal MAC addresses. The ONU that use these MAC addresses can not register
with the OLT. The ONU of other MAC addresses can be registered to the OLT.

3) Mac Address Whitelist

When the authentication mode is set to whitelist, the MAC addresses added to the MAC
address list are valid MAC addresses. The ONU that use these MAC addresses can register to the
OLT. The ONU that do not use these MAC addresses can not register with the OLT.

4) LOID

When the authentication mode is set to LOID , the ONU using the LOID in the whitelist can
register to the OLT. The ONU that does not use these LOID can not register to the OLT.

5) Hybrid

When the authentication mode is set to Hybrid, the authentication match condition is mac
address or LOID. If any of the MAC address or LOID exists in the whitelist, the ONU can
30 / 78
register normally with the OLT. If the two do not meet, the ONU can not register.

6.2.9 OLT Port Mirror

The port mirroring function copies a packet from the specified port (source port) to another
port (destination port). You can monitor and troubleshoot packets that are copied to the
destination port by monitoring the packets.
The device supports all the upper and PON port mirroring functions. All uplink ports and
PON ports can be set as source ports or destination ports.
Double click the 'Switch Control Module' icon on the left side of the main page to open
the 'Control Module Management' window and enter the 'Port Mirror' to view the page.

Source Port
36 / 78
Specify the source port that needs packet capture, here is the concept of ‘Ingress Direct’
and ‘Egress Direct’.
‘Egress Direct’ refers to the direction of the packet leaving the port; ‘Ingress Direct’ refers
to the direction of the message into the port.
When only one of the directions is selected, the mirror corresponds to a direction of the
message to the destination port. When both directions are selected, the packets in both directions
are mirrored to the destination port.
Destination Port
The port that receives message of the source port.
The configuration of the port image is as follows:
1) select the source port. Port1 ~ Port16 can be selected as the source port, each port has
'Ingress Direct’ and 'Egress Direct'. The former refers to the port which receive message, The
latter refers to the port which sent message.
2) specify the destination port. You can specify one of the ge1 ~ ge8 ports as the
destination port, and all source port data will be forwarded to the specified destination port.

Operation
In this section, we can set ‘enable’ or ‘disable’ to enable or disable this function.
[Example of port mirroring configuration ]
Example: Select ge2 in the ‘Ingress Direct’ and ‘Egress Direct’ and select ge8 in
‘Destination port’, select ‘enable’ in the ‘Operation’ then click ‘Set’ button. All traffic of ge2
are mirrored to ge8 port.

6.2.10 OLT IGMP Snooping Config (Nowadays, it is unavailable.)

If a host wants to receive multicast packets sent to a particular group, it needs to listen for
all packets destined for that particular group. In order to solve the routing choice of multicast
packets on the Internet, the host needs to join or leave a group by informing the multicast router

37 / 78
on its subnet. IGMP is used in the multicast to complete this task. In this way, the multicast
router can know the members of the multicast group on the network, and thus decide whether to
forward multicast packets to their network. When a multicast router receives a multicast packet,
it checks the multicast destination address of the packet and forwards it only if it has a member
of that group on the interface.

IGMP on the OLT provides the information needed to forward the multicast packet to the
end of the destination and achieve the following two-way functionality:
1.The host advertises the information that OLT wishes to receive or leave a specific
multicast group through IGMP.
2.OLT periodically checks whether or not the members of the multicast group in the LAN
are active through IGMP and implement the collection and maintenance of the membership
of the connected segment group.

Our company's EPON 8 or 4 OLT multicast configuration described as below:

Double click the 'Switch Control Module' icon on the left side of the main page to open
the 'Control Module Management' window and enter the 'IGMP Snooping Config' to view
the page.

IGMP Snooping Config

 IGMP Snooping

In this option, there are two status, namely ‘enable’, ‘disable’.

When configured as 'enable', IGMP Snooping is enabled. The Layer 2 device running IGMP
Snooping establishes a mapping relationship between the port and the MAC multicast address by
analyzing the received IGMP messages and forwards the multicast data according to the mapping
relationship. After Layer 2 devices run IGMP Snooping, multicast data of known multicast
groups are not broadcast on Layer 2 and multicast to designated receivers on Layer 2.
38 / 78
When configured as 'disable', IGMP snooping is disabled. When the Layer 2 device does
not run IGMP Snooping, the multicast data is broadcast on Layer 2.

 IGMP Query Proxy

In this option, there are two status, namely ‘enable’, ‘disable’.

When configured as 'enable', IGMP Query Proxy is enabled.

When configured as 'disable', IGMP Query Proxy is disabled.

7 ONU Device Management

7.1 Introduction of ONU Device Management

The ONU device is a client device in the EPON system. The management of the ONU
device through the EMS software is carried out through the OLT device to which it is connected.
The OLT manages the ONU device through the OAM management packet based on the
IEEE802.3ah standard.
The EMS software supports many kind of ONU, such as 1FE ONU, 4FE ONU, 8FE ONU,
24FE ONU, 1FE + 1GE ONU, 4FE + 2POTS ONU, 4FE + 1CATV ONU, 4FE + 2POTS +
1CATV ONU, and so on.
In this part, the commonly used 4FE + 1CATV ONU is introduced as an example to
introduce the management of ONU devices by EMS software. The data types ONU and the
multi-service type ONU are basically the same, and the different parts are in the same way. Refer
to the relevant documentation for this type of device.

48 / 78
Double click the 'ONU' icon on the left side of the main page to open the 'ONU

information config

We can view ONU ID, ONU Device Type, ONU Hardware Revision, ONU Firmware
Revision, ONU MAC, Registered LLID Number, Online ONU Status, Receiving Optical Power,
Transmitted Optical Power and ONU Distance on the ONU Management page.

Some of the parameters are explained as follows:

 ONU ID

The ONU ID is the ID number assigned by the OLT device to each ONU. The purpose is to
facilitate the user to identify a specific ONU. The ONU ID, with the range of 1 to 64, is a unique
value in each OLT PON port. When the ONU first registers a PON port of the OLT device, the
device software assigns the ONU with an unused ID value under the PON port. When the ONU
is powered down or dropped to the PON port again, the ONU Still use the previously assigned
ID value. When the ONU is deleted from the PON port (it can be deleted only when the device is
not online), the ID number assigned to the ONU is reclaimed. The IDU whose ID number is
re-registered will be reassigned.

 Number of registered LLID

The number of LLID that the ONU currently has registered to the OLT.

 ONU Link Distance

This parameter calculates the logical optical link distance from the OLT to the ONU by
calculating the RTT (round-trip-time optical signal round trip time), only as a reference.

7.3 CATV Enable, RSTP Config, Port Isolation Config

51 / 78
Double click the 'ONU' icon on the left side of the main page to open the 'ONU
Management' window and enter the 'Advanced Configure' to view the page. As shown below.

RSTP
We can enable or disable the RSTP feature via setting the ‘Loop Detect’ parameter. The
RSTP function is applicable to the ONU user port to prevent the user port from looping. When
the RSTP function is enabled and the ONU user port is looped, one port will be automatically
disconnected according to the STP protocol. Thus lifting the loop.
Port Isolation
For multi-user port ONU devices, multiple user ports have the ability to exchange Layer 2,
but users usually use EPON technology networking, often do not need to connect different ports
of the user or user groups to communicate with each other, special application scenarios have
such a need. You can enable or disable Layer 2 switching between ONU user ports by setting the
port isolation function ‘enable’ or ‘disable’.
ONU CATV Port Enable
Enable or disable the CATV port function of the ONU by setting the ‘CATV’ parameter to
‘enable or disable’. Through this function, we can be achieved remotely open or close the ONU
CATV port.

7.4.2 ONU Queue Management(temporarily unavailable)

Queue management belongs to the congestion control policy of link IP layer, which mainly
adopts queuing algorithm and packet discarding strategy in the equipment. Queue algorithms
allocate the bandwidth by deciding which packages can be transferred, and the discard strategy is
to allocate the cache by deciding which packages are discarded.
Open the 'ONU Management' window and enter the 'ONU Queue Management' to view
the page. As shown below.

7.4.3 ONU Port Input and Output Rate Limit

Multicast Switching Mode
In this page, users can choose multicast switching mode, including ‘IGMP/MLD Snooping’,
‘CTC Controllable IGMP/MLD’, ‘IGMP Snooping’, ‘CTC Controllable IGMP’, ‘Pass Through’,
and set fast leave enable state.
 Pass Through Mode

ONU does not do any processing of multicast messages and broadcasts multicast messages
to all ports of ONU in a broadcast way.
 IGMP/MLD Snooping Mode

ONU IGMP Snooping function is based on vlan, so you need to add the ONU user port to
the corresponding multicast VLAN, and you need to add the same VLAN in the VLAN
configuration of the ONU port. When the IGMP Snooping function is closed, all multicast
message will be broadcast to the ONU user port.
 CTC Controllable IGMP/MLD

Multicast messages are broadcast to all ports of ONU, and unlike the transparent model,
multicast VLAN tag packets can be processed and selected whether stripping VLAN tag.
In addition, ‘IGMP Snooping’ mode and ’CTC Controllable IGMP’ mode only support OLT
for TK solution.
Fast leave enable
Fast leave function option has two state, including ‘enable’ and ‘disable’. When configured
as ‘enable’ ,this function is on, and when configured as ‘disable’, this function is off.

page. As shown below.

As show above, users can set ‘Port ID’ to specify configured ONU ID. In addition, through
‘IGMP Group’ configuring max igmp group of ONU each port, and the range of value is 0-255.
Multicast vlan Tag processing mode refers to the processing method of vlan tags when
multicast messages are exported from user ports, and there are three types
1) not strip vlan tag: multicast messages are not stripped of the vlan tag when they are
output from the ONU port .
2) strip vlan tag: multicast messages are stripped of the vlan tag when they are output from
the ONU port .
3) switch vlan tag: When multicast messages are output from the ONU port, the vlan tag is
converted.

7.7 ONU Port VLAN Configuration

ONU supports four port VLAN modes: Transparent mode, Tag mode, Translate mode,
Aggregation mode, Trunk mode. These five modes are introduced as follows.

7.7.1 ONU Port Transparent VLAN Mode

In this mode, ONU equipment for processing the received uplink Ethernet frame mode is

not any treatment of the Ethernet frame (regardless of whether the Ethernet frame with VLAN
Tag) transparent to the Ethernet frame forwarding; for downstream is transparent forwarding
mode. As shown below:

 Port ID:choose configured ONU ID .

7.7.2 ONU Port Tag VLAN Mode

In this mode, The ONU device processes the received uplink Ethernet frame by adding a
VLAN tag to it; for the downstream Ethernet frame, stripping its VLAN tag.
Direction With VLAN Tag Operation
Upstream YES Discard this packet.
NO Add default VLAN Tag to this packet and forward.

Downstream YES If the VID is not equal to the port default VLAN ID, discard this
packet. Otherwise strip the VLAN Tag of this packet and forward.
NO Discard this packet.

7.7.3 ONU Port Translate VLAN Mode

In this mode, The ONU device translates the user-tagged VLAN tag (the VID may not be its
own, and may have the same VID among other users in the same system) to the unique VLAN
tag. Downstream to perform the opposite operation.
Direction With VLAN Tag Operation
Upstream YES If the VID of a packet equal to the CVLAN ID of a certain
translation entry, overwrite the packet VID with this entry’s
SVLAN ID and forward this packet’s; If the VID of a packet is not
equal to any translation entry’s CVLAN ID,discard this packet.
NO Add default VLAN Tag to this packet and forward this packet.
Downstream YES If the VID of a packet equal to the SVLAN ID of a certain
translation entry, overwrite the packet’s VID with this entry’s
CVLAN ID and forward this packet; If the VID of a packet is not
equal to any translation entry’s SVLAN ID.

7.8 ONU Upstream and Downstream Rate Limit

In the EPON network, after ONU registers successfully, it’s uplink OLT device will assign
one logic link for it, identified by LLID. In downstream direction, OLT add LLID filed to the
received standard Ethernet frame then send them to all registered ONU devices. In upstream
direction, OLT schedule and forward upstream packets based on the logic links registered by
ONU devices.
Double click the 'ONU' icon on the left side of the main page to open the 'ONU
Management' window and enter the ‘Link SLA’ to view the page to configure and management
ONU register logic link SLA. As shown below.

As shown above, the page shows the SLA configuration of all logical links registered under
the PON card in listing form, each SLA configuration corresponding to the 'PON port link ID-
direction' index. The link ID is the ID number assigned by ONU when OLT is registered. The
logical link ID corresponding to each ONU device can be viewed by looking at the logical
interface on the ONU management interface. The SLA parameter configuration is divided into
two directions: upstream and downstream.
Following subsections introduce the logic link management parameters:

 Min assure bandwidth

Min assure bandwidth is the min bandwidth of dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm for
the link assigned. DBA also assure that the link can achieve min assure bandwidth. It’s the lower
limit of dynamic bandwidth allocation.
The setting range of Min assure bandwidth is : 0~1000000, in kbps, and fault value is 0.

Note: The SLA configuration failed when the min assure bandwidth of all links under a
67 / 78
PON was greater than 1G.

 Max assure bandwidth

Max assure bandwidth is the max bandwidth of dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm
It’s the upper limit of dynamic bandwidth allocation. If the link bandwidth is not limited, it is
recommended to set it to 1000Mbps.
The setting range of Max assure bandwidth is : 0~1000000, in kbps, and fault value is
10000.

 Max burst byte

The setting range of Max burst byte is : 1~256, in Kbytes.
