SUBJECT: Trip Report to Earthquakes and Tsunamis, who to belief? Conference

On Tuesday the 22nd of September 2020 I attended a virtual conference from 12:00pm to 1:30pm to learn

about trustworthy sources from where people can get accurate information about earthquakes and

tsunamis. This Trip Report will give some important information about earthquakes, Tsunamis and where

to find good and reliable information about the topic.

MEETING WITH JOSE M. RIVERA TORRES

Professor Jose M. Rivera Torres of the department of chemistry and physics of the university of Puerto

Rico Ponce presided the virtual conference of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, who to belief?

CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE

19 people attended the conference. Most of them were students of UPRP.

DISCUSSION

Professor José M. Rivera Torres explained that an earthquake is a sudden movement that bursts

accumulated energy from the cortex and upper mantle of the earth, and that it is caused do to:

➢ Ruptures in the geological faults

➢ Volcanic activity

➢ Explosions

The professor also explained that a Tsunami is a sea wave that results from a large-scale seafloor

displacement associated with big earthquakes.

Then Professor Jose M. Rivera went on to tell the story of how the RSPR (Red Sismica de Puerto Rico)

came to be from when it was first installed by the USGS.

The professor presided by explaining the earthquake events that occur in the southern region of Puerto

Rico in January 2020. During this time he went over how the magnitude and intensities are determined by

using the Richer and Mercalli scales respectively, and explained that do to the uncertainty of this

estimated processes that is normal that various agencies would have differences of 0.2 to 0.3 units.

Professor Jose M. Rivera continued by discussing and disregarding some myths like earthquakes can be

predicted, is good that many little seismic events occur, that animals can predict earthquakes, etc.

The professor finalized the conference by stating that the best sources to look for information about

earthquakes and tsunamis and to be well informed are the RSPR and the USGS approved media accounts.

CLOSING

Earthquakes and Tsunamis are natural events that can not be predicted when are they going to occur.

Measuring their magnitudes and intensities will always have a margin of error. Having many little seismic

events and that animals can predict earthquakes are just myths. The best sources to be up to date and well

informed about earthquakes and Tsunamis according to Professor Jose M. Rivera are the approved media

accounts of the RSPR and the USGS.
