When it comes to drilling, efficiency is
the name of the game. But regularly
scheduled maintenance of equipment
is not always efficient. Sometimes it
comes too early, and the rig experiences
downtime even though everything is
working perfectly. Sometimes it comes too
late and big problems occur, which can
be expensive to repair.
Canrig brings you predictive maintenance
through RigWatch® ECM, our equipment
condition monitoring system. With
RigWatch® ECM, Canrig places sensors
on rig machinery to gather information
that determines how well the equipment
is performing and when it might be due
for maintenance. RigWatch® ECM improves
rig reliability by monitoring and issuing
alerts about the network health of the
rig controls. This information is fed into
a computer on the rig, then transmitted
to a satellite ground system so it can be
accessed any time via myWells.com®,
Canrig’s Internet portal. The information
can then be accessed and viewed by
key decision-makers on the rig or at
remote locations.

When RigWatch® ECM is installed on your top drive,
it does not have to be rigged down for rig moves. The
equipment is designed to automatically restart and
establish operation after a rig move without requiring
a technician visit. The equipment necessary to
install RigWatch® ECM on your top drive includes the
remote access junction box, TDSU wireless radio,
TDSU antenna, a wireless unit to be mounted in the rig
manager’s office and an antenna to be mounted on
the rig manager’s house.

With a Caterpillar® engine, the RigWatch® ECM system
includes a service loop connector for easy access to
the engine software. It’s powered by the engine battery
in a self-contained, portable system that is designed
for minimal support and maintenance.
BENEFITS
Sophisticated sensors, purpose-built software and
Web-based data collection allow equipment maintenance
for top drives and engines to be remotely monitored
anytime from anywhere in the world. This can identify
problems before they occur so maintenance can be
scheduled as needed. The result is a new level of
drilling efficiency.
CASE STUDY
RigWatch® ECM triggered an alert for “Top Drive High
Differential Pressure” on the HMI screen. As the alert
continued to escalate with no resolution, the system
automatically distributed electronic notifications to
the toolpusher and Canrig’s RIGLINE 24/7™ support
center. Field technicians contacted the rig and began
troubleshooting the issue. The rig crew discovered
and removed two 4-inch strands of silicone in the
Y-Stranger of the top drive causing the differential
pressure to rise. Once the repairs were completed, the
system removed the alert and the rig crew continued
turning to the right.
