II. ACQUISITION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE

A. Imagery, in a literary text, is an author’s use of vivid and descriptive language to add depth to
his or her work. It appeals to human senses to deepen the reader’s understanding of the work.
Powerful forms of imagery engage all of the senses.

B. Imagery is essential to nearly every form of writing, and writers use imagery for a wide variety of
reasons:

1. It engages readers: Imagery allows readers to see and feel what's going on in a story. It fully
engages the reader's imagination, and brings them into the story.
2. It's interesting: Writing without imagery would be dry and dull, while writing with imagery can
be vibrant and gripping.
3. It can set the scene and communicate character: The description of how a person or place
looks, moves, sounds, smells, does as much to tell you about that person or place as any
explanation can. Imagery is not just "window dressing," it is the necessary sensory detail that
allows a reader to understand the world and people being described, from their fundamental
traits to their mood.
4. It can be symbolic: Imagery can both describe the world and establish symbolic meanings that
deepen the impact of the text. Such symbolism can range from the weather (rain occurring in
moments of sadness) to symbolism that is even deeper or more complex, such as the way that
Moby-Dick layers multiple meanings through his descriptions of the whiteness of the whale.

Forms of Imagery

1. Visual imagery pertains to graphics, visual scenes, pictures, or the sense of sight.
Example:

The night was black as ever, but bright stars lit up the sky in beautiful and varied
constellations which were sprinkled across the astronomical landscape.

In this example, the experience of the night sky is described in depth with color (black as
ever, bright), shape (varied constellations), and pattern (sprinkled).

2. Auditory imagery pertains to sounds, noises, music, or the sense of hearing. This kind of
imagery may come in the form of onomatopoeia).
Example:
Silence was broken by the peal of piano keys as Shannon began practicing her concerto.

Here, auditory imagery breaks silence with the beautiful sound of piano keys.

3. Olfactory imagery pertains to odors, scents, or the sense of smell.

Example:
She smelled the scent of sweet of sweet hibiscus wafting through the air, its tropical
smell a reminder that she was on vacation in a beautiful place.

The scent of hibiscus helps describe a scene which is relaxing, warm, and welcoming.

4. Gustatory imagery pertains to flavors or the sense of taste.

Example:
The candy melted in her mouth and swirls of bittersweet chocolate and slightly sweet but
salty caramel blended together on her tongue.

With an in-depth description of the candy’s various flavors, the reader can almost
experience the deliciousness directly.

5. Tactile imagery pertains to physical textures or the sense of touch.

Example:
As she wiped the sweat from her brow, she realized her skin was just as cold and sticky.

With how the writer described the sweat, the reader can almost feel the coldness and
stickiness of it on her skin.

6. Kinesthetic imagery pertains to movements or the sense of bodily motion.

Example:
The thief walked sneakily into the darkened room and hurriedly went rummaging
through the drawers hoping to find the diamond bracelet.

The phrases walked sneakily and hurriedly went rummaging through the drawers paint a
picture on the mind of the reader about how a thief goes about his act of stealing a
diamond bracelet.

7. Organic imagery or subjective imagery pertains to personal experiences of a character’s

body, including emotion and the senses of hunger, thirst, fatigue, and pain.
Example:
After seeing that his name was on the retrenchment list, the poor clerk slumped back on
his chair and went on to finish the remainder of his work with lack of energy and clouded
thoughts in his brain.
The phrases went on with lack of energy and clouded thoughts in his brain paint an
image of a clerk who feels dejected after seeing his name among those who will be
retrenched.
