• Briefly describe some of the historical events that have led to
the broad range of Asian Americans that are now part of our
education system.
• How might these events contribute to different cultural
perspectives within the Asian American community?
BACKGROUND HISTORY
• Before the mid 1960’s, the saying “Asian Americans” was not
the statement used to describe someone of the Asian Heritage
living in the United States.
• Non-Asian Americans gave Asian Americans that name later.
• Asian Activists later adopted the saying “Asian American”
• Filipinos, Japanese, and Chinese people
• Adopted to express common experiences of racism.
IMMIGRATION ACT OF 1965
• Since this bill was passed, the
Asian American Population is
now more diverse and Asian
Americans have been
classified socioeconomically.
• This is also known as the Hart-
Cellar Act.
• Because of this law, Asians and
other Europeans were able to
come to the U.S and set down
roots and create families.
CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT OF 1882
• This bill put a stop to the
immigration of the Chinese
and other Asian heritages
for a whole ten years.
• This was signed into a law on
May 6, 1882.
• Due to this, Asians were no
longer eligible to come or
work in the United States.
National Origins Act of 1924
• This bill provided funding and
provisions for immigration courts.
• The Western Hemisphere was
excluded from this bill.
• Banned all Asian Immigrants except
Filipinos because the Philippines was
a U.S Territory.
• The intent of this bill was to try and
keep America a WASP Nation.
• WASP= White Anglo-Saxon
Protestants
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ASIANS
TODAY??
• There is a more diverse
group of Asian Americans in
the United States.
• People from more countries
are migrating to the U.S.
Everyday.
• Pakistan
• Bangledesh
• Sri Lanka
CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES
• These Historical Events can help teachers,
mentors, and other students understand the
Asian American Culture a Little more.
• These events show us Americans just how
much the Asian Countries had to go through
to even be considered Americans.
• Students can communicate with Asian
Americans in school and understand where
they come from in some of their views.
• Most Americans view Asians as the “Model
Minority”
• This states that Asians do not get in
trouble and they do very well in school.
• Some Americans even state that Asian
American’s can be “Problem Free” and
“Whiz Kids”.
