Concept Notes:
• The steps in solving routine problems are:

a. Understand – Know what is asked, what are given.

b. Plan – Know the operation. Write the number sentence.

c. Solve – Write the correct units/label your answer.

EXAMPLE:
Mang Tomas has 1848 eggs to be delivered to the market. If the eggs are to
be placed in small trays with 6 eggs each, how many trays will be needed?

Solution:
• Understand

Know what is asked: The number of trays needed

Know the given facts: 1848 eggs, 6 eggs in a tray

• Plan
Determine the operation to be used: Division

Write the number sentence: 1848 ÷ 6 = n

• Solve Show your solution: 1848 ÷ 6 = 308

• Check and Look Back

• Review and recheck your answer: You can use a calculator to divide 1848 by
6, or multiply 308 by 6.
Exercise/Practice/Drill
Solve the following problems
1. Kristine’s round trip jeepney fare to school is ₱ 20.00 a day. If she has ₱200.00
for jeepney fares to school, how many round trips to school would that be?
1. Understand: _________________________
2. Plan: _______________________________
3. Solve: ______________________________
4. Check and Look Back: _________________
2. Kenneth has 576 old coins in four boxes. The same number of coins are in each box.
How many coins are in each box?
3. Certain school collected 375 canned goods to be given to 25 typhoon-affected families
in their barangay. How many canned goods will each family receive?
4. A school has 735 Grade 4 pupils. If there are 15 sections in the Grade 4 level, how
many pupils will each section have?

MATHEMATICS 4
Week 8 Day 2

Objective To solve non-routine problems involving division of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1- to 2-

digit numbers including money using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools.
Concept Notes:

To solve non-routine problems involving division, read and analyze the problem carefully.
Tell what is asked and what are given. Then, use other strategies like act out the problem,
listing/table method, guess and test, drawing/making a diagram, using patterns, working
backwards, etc. to solve.
Example:
Kathleen opened her Math book and found that the sum of the pages facing her was 243.
What pages did she open to?
Solution:
Understand
Know what is asked: The pages of the book
Know the given facts: The sum of the two pages was 243
Plan
Determine the operation to be used: Division
Write the number sentence: 243 ÷ 2 = n
Solve
Show your solution: 243 ÷ 2 = 121 r. 1
Check and Look Back
Review and recheck your answer: You cannot have a page that is 121 r. 1
Answer: since pages of a book are consecutively numbered, Kathleen opened pages 121 and
122.
Exercise/Practice/Drill
Try solving the following problems.
1. Camille went to a bank and requested the cashier to change her three 1000 bills. How
many bills will she receive if she asks for:
A) ₱ 20-bills? C) ₱ 200-bills?
B) ₱ 50-bills? D) ₱ 500-bills?
2. Eight telephone poles in a row are equal in distance from each other. If the distance from
the first to the last pole is 140 meters, what is the distance between each pole? Make a
diagram or drawing as your solution.
3. How many thousands are there in 1 000 000?

– Understand: __________________________________________________
– Plan: _________________________________________________________
– Solve: ________________________________________________________
– Check and Look Back: ________________________________________

Concept Notes:

Read and analyze the problem.

Leo bought four T-shirts and two pairs of pants for only ₱3,000.00. If the T-shirt
cost ₱300.00 each, find the cost of each pair of pants.

Solution:

Asked: What is the cost of each pair of pants?

Given: 4 T-shirts, 2 pairs of pants for only ₱ 3 000.00, and a T-shirt costs ₱ 300.00
each

Hidden Questions: the total cost of 4 T-shirts

Operations: Multiplication and Subtraction

Number Sentence : ₱ 3 000.00 ─ (₱ 300.00 × 4) ÷ 2 = N

Answer
First: ₱ 300 × 4 = ₱ 1 200.00 Third: ₱1 800.00÷ 2= ₱ 900.00

Second: ₱ 3 000.00 ─ ₱ 1 200.00 = ₱1 800.00 ₱ 900.00 cost of each pair of pants
