READING INTERVENTION LESSON PLAN

STUDENT/PSEUDONYM: Anna (8th grade)

DATE: 11/1/2020

GOAL: Goal 1 (Comprehension): When given a passage, Anna will read and correctly

answer explicit comprehension questions.

RATIONALE: Based on her results from the QRI passages, this student struggles

with comprehension. More specifically she struggles with answering explicit

questions from the text. For example, she was instructional on the 3rd grade

narrative passage, but her comprehension was at the frustration level. Because of

this, I chose to make comprehension one of this student’s goals. During this

intervention, I will teach the student how to use a story map to guide her

comprehension of a narrative passage.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE CORE STANDARD(S):

- Standard - CC.1.3.8.K: Read and comprehend literary fiction on grade level,

reading independently and proficiently.

STEPS OF EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION:

* Materials:
- Happy Trails passage and comprehension questions from:

- Story Map graphic organizer

1. Introduce the story map strategy:

a. Give the student a blank story map graphic organizer.

b. Discuss the components of a story (characters, setting, problem, main

events, solution).

2. Model how to complete the graphic organizer.

3. The student will read the passage Happy Trails independently.

4. While reading, the student will complete the story map.

5. After reading, the student will fill in any missing information on the story

map.

6. Then I will discuss the story with the student and ask her what she wrote in

each section of the story map.

7. Finally, the student will answer five comprehension questions from the text.

ASSESSMENT:

- I will collect the student’s completed story map and comprehension questions

in order to assess her comprehension of the text.

REFLECTION:

- I feel like this intervention went well. However, after teaching this lesson,

there are some things that I would like to improve upon. For instance, I feel

like I should have had the student read aloud and I would guide her in

completing the story map. Instead, I had her read silently and fill in the

story map independently, and then I discussed the story map with the

student. I asked her to explain what she wrote in each section, and then I

asked questions based on her responses and extended on what she said. Even

though I went over the student’s answers on the graphic organizer after

reading, I feel like it would have been better to guide her in finding the

correct information in the text. The reason I didn’t do this was because I

didn’t want to interrupt the student while she was reading, and interfere

with her comprehension of the text. Besides this, I feel like this

intervention went well and helped the student in comprehending the passage.

*Work sample must follow the intervention lesson plan*

**Cooperating teacher must sign and date each intervention plan prior to
